Hello - Just diagnosed with lots of questions

Post by mikev » Thu Dec 22, 2005 4:04 pm

Like the title says, hello. I was diagnosed 2 days ago with this sleep apnea and the Dr is sending me back for yet another sleep study to get a CPAP machine.

I have lots of questions about all this, but if there is a FAQ or something out there, could you please point me in the right direction so I don't waste your time here.

Thanks in advance.

You might check out the CPAP FAQ section. The icon (red with a question mark) is at the top of the page.

Good luck with your sleep study.

The folks here are happy to help and support you on your first days of the new adventure you are starting, as well as help you along the way - even years later if you need it.
They're a great bunch.

Thanks for the help. I have read through many of those faqs above, but I really have more basic questions.

My biggest is what all the numbers mean on my sleep study, and should I really get concerned?

I understand Central apnea, obstructive and mixed. I'm not clear about hypopnea and why that is bad (its slow breathing right)?

My Dr says this is a severe case, but couldn't really explain it to me, just that a CPAP would fix it.

Is there any site that can give me a breakdown of what all these terms mean in my sleep study?

I would post it here, but I don't want to clog up your forums with an unnecessary post.

Thanks in advance.

Here's a link to a fairly extensive glossary of terms for sleep apnea. This will bring you to the A's:

Sleep A-Z

and here's another one: Sleep Terms, Definitions and Abbreviations

Hi Mikev,

You needn't worry about asking things that may have been asked in the past. People on this board are very understanding about what it's like to be new to this kind of diagnosis and treatment. Ask anything you wish. You'll get tons of support here!

Since you're particularly interested in getting more info about your own sleep study results, you might want to gather together as many charts and info as you can from your report and post those on the ASAA Sleep Studies forum.

If you're lucky, the sleep professional (RRT, RPSGT, Sleep Lab Manager) nicknamed "deltadave" on that site ("sleepydave" on this site) will see it and help you understand what went on in your sleep on that fateful night!

I too was diagnosed with "lots of questions", at an early age.
My kids had the same diagnosis.
I think it's incurable.
Usually not fatal.
(Unless you're a cat.)
Prognosis is good.

Thanks for all your repies.

I was directed to the apnea support forums, so I have posted over there.

Looks like I will be back here when I get my sleep test with CPAP done (hopefully real real soon).

Well... no. Hypopnea is shallow breathing, not necessarily slow breathing. And its bad because it means you airways are contricted. Ever tried to fill a pail from a pinched hose that is letting the water just dribble through?

Welcome, and good luck!

O.
