Tearing....swollen eyelid

Post by twins8 » Thu Dec 22, 2005 8:32 am

I'm sure this has been asked before, so I'll ask forgiveness ahead of this.

New to the board and in love with my machine...nasal pillows, etc. Never slept so well....but here's the problem:

About two weeks ago my right eye began to tear up...massive sneezing..and my right lid began to swell. I did not use my contacts and switched to glasses for a couple of days. Finally went to the med center and the doc said nasal infection. I said okay...but it does not act like a normal one. He gave me a Z-pak, antibiotic eye drops and nasal spray.

I've gone through two Z-paks and just can't seem to stop the eye weeping or the lid swelling....I've given the contacts a break for a few days and it begins to feel better. But 8 hours of contacts...and a night of the machine and it all comes back.

Is it possible the machine aggrivates my ENT? About a month ago I increased my pressure to 14 because I was waking at 12 in the night.

I've been on the machine for three months and it's been a Godsend until now. I actually look forward to going to bed and sleeping. Waking up rested is such a wonderful experience for me after 5 years of two hours a night an tons of Ambien.

Thanks in advance~

I had an eye problem and I finally believe that there was a slight leak in the mask, sometimes I could feel it and it dried my eye out. Tried to correct this and my eye is 100% better. In the interim I used refresh plus often.

I am curious, as I was sleeping better for about a month or so and now waking again. How long were you on the machine before the pressure was increased?Did they do another study to determine your new pressure? I am wondering if that can be an issue for me

I had major mask leaks during a portion of my sleep study, which resulted in massively red eyes, tearing, and puffiness in both eyes. I normally wear contacts for 12 + hours a day without a problem, but for about 24 hours after my sleep study, I couldn't wear them. Based on my experience (which is limited), I would guess that you have a mask leak.

Good luck and keep us posted!

I kind of doubt a nasal pillows mask would leak that badly, thought obviously it's worth checking.

I've read of people reinfecting themselves with strep throat because the streps stayed on their toothbrush.

I think that - in addition to checking for leaks - I'ld stop using the contact lenses for a long as it takes for the problem to clear, and I'ld see what could be done about disinfecting the mask - that is not necessarily very simple, maybe someone at cpap.com can give you tips about that.

I would also, definitely, return to the doctor.

O.

If you are having infection problems, I suggest that you try one of these bacteria filters from https://www.cpap.com/productpage/Respir ... -pack.html
