I am scheduled for a sleep study. They want me to arrive at 9pm and will wake me at 5-530 am. I explained that I work the swing shift and don't normally go to bed until 1-2 am. I get out of bed at 8am. I have had OSA and have been using a cpap for 9 years. I know that I have OSA. I want to know why I am not sleeping more than 2 hrs . Am I being unreasonable by insisting that my sleep study be conducted during my normal sleeping time? I repeat. This study is to determmine why I awaken after 1-2 hrs . I am using a Goodnight 420E in the auto mode and I download my data frequently to make minor adjustments. They are insisting that I arrive at 9pm. It seems like a waste of time since this would not be a true representation of my sleep period.

Re: Sleep study
You are not being unreasonable, but expect to yell, scream, text, email, phone, insist, and in general throw a "hissy fit" in order to have them see it your way.
They have a set schedule, and if you don't fit in, they will try to use a bigger hammer. Stand fast, and good luck.

Re: Sleep study
Maybe you could call a few sleep centers and ask their policy for accomodating those who are late to sleep and late to rise. But even with your current center, ask in advance if you can be guaranteed to be the last to be hooked up, and that should buy you an hour or two, and ask who has the authority to allow you to sleep beyond the usual wake-up time. A small sleep lab that locks up and goes home in the morning might not have as much leeway as one that also schedules MSLT tests during the day. In those cases a tech has to be there anyway so it's not like they had to pay overtime for someone to stay. I think I'd wait to be sure there are not other options before scheduling a test you are concerned will not be diagnostic.

The center that I went to, a major cardiac care center here in the Twin Cities, runs their sleep studies in two shifts. Each tech has 2 people, and early person and a late person. I took the early slot once. This was getting wired up during the 9PM hour, then in bed around 10 PM. I think I got up around 6 AM that time. Another time, I had the late shift, which was getting wired up around 10:30 PM, and in bed around 11:30. I fell asleep about midnight, and they got me up around 7:30 AM. This later slot is only an hour off of what you are talking about, so maybe you can work something out or find a center that will work with you like this.

I would look for some clues in the reports. I highlighted some of the things that jump out at me from your post.
Are you having events and/or pressure increases prior to waking up?
Supposedly, our sleep cycles run from about 90 - 120 minutes. If you're in a deep sleep stage (or REM) and the machine interprets (or mis-interprets) something in your breathing that tells it to increase pressure, you could be getting awakened out of your sleep by those pressure changes.
Have you tried straight pressure (CPAP mode)? Adjusting pressures (APAP mode) have messed up the sleep of many users......it could be happening to you, too.

Re: Sleep study
What about a home sleep study, in your own bed, schedule, and sleeping conditions?
Call around to sleep centers and see if you can find one that does home studies. Medicare and many private insurers are happy to pay for home sleep studies--they are less expensive than in-lab studies and accuracy is documented.
