Seeking content suggestions for a CPAP Travel kit

Post by WestCoastCdnGrl » Tue Jan 04, 2011 10:45 pm

Hi!

Was wondering if any of you experienced CPAP'ers have suggestions as to what to include in a travel kit for your CPAP machine.

I recently lost the micro-fit dial for my Quattro mask on Saturday afternoon and, as a result, have been unable to use my CPAP until today (my DME is open M-F and was closed yesterday, as it was a statutory holiday here in Canada) As luck would have it, the wayward dial was found shortly after I returned home from purchasing the replacement and a spare.

This exercise in futility got me thinking about making up a spare parts kit for home and a travel kit to keep in my travel bag... I figure that a spare parts kit is going to be easy enough to make up (I've got a spare dial now and am going to order a cushion and clip and perhaps some other bits & pieces), but I was wondering if you could tell me what the "must haves" might be to include in a travel kit in my carrying bag.

So far, I my proposed kit contains the aforementioned wayward micro dial and was thinking that some cleaning agent (either a travel sized bottle of soap or a bunch of individually sealed wipes) and a micro fibre hand towel for wipe downs/drying (I don't necessarily trust hotel linen not to be scratchy) would likely be de rigeur to include in the kit.

I've got a "Medical Equipment Id Tag" (that I printed up myself and had laminated at Staples for less than CAD 5$ including tax... I refused to pay USD 9$ + shipping for one with advertising from an online supplier) attached to the outside of the bag and I also have copies of my CPAP prescription, statement of medical need from my ENT doc, a travel letter from my DME (complete with specific equipment models and serial numbers of my gear) and "that CPAP page" from the TSA website placed into individual plastic page protectors and bound together in a duotang folder tucked into a front pocket of my travel bag for easy reference.

Is there anything else that you would suggest I include?

Thank you in advance for your input and advice!

spare parts kit... a spare hose... I've had them break in the middle of the night (even early in the night would mean that it's hard to get replaced as everything's closed).

Good suggestion!

My DME supplied ResMed package included both a Climateline and a slimline hose... I use the climateline hose and have the slimline tucked away as a spare.

Extra mask. Elastic/pantyhose and twist ties/paper clips to jury rig stuff. Duct tape. Extra hose. Long extension cord. Small bottle of whatever you wash with. Bottle of water. Piece of non-slip plastic to set the machine on so it doesn't slide. Washcloth for drying & setting mask on. I have several Velcro connectors (commonly called cable ties) that I use to keep hose under control; they work well as emergency loops to hold the hose above the CPAP.

If you are going on a cruise, make sure you take extension cords...they don't seem to have outlets above the bed where it's needed!!

I take a "Christmas" extension cord everywhere with my cpap..........it's the kind with outlets every couple feet, and is usually about 8' long for stringing lights through a Christmas tree. I've used the extra outlets when I used to have an Aussie hose to plug in, in addition to the cpap....and then there's always the other "necessities" of life that one travels with...chargers for cell phones, ereaders, iPods etc

Nipple grease! And adhesive tape to repair nearly anything that breaks.*

Remember when packing your CPAP case that anything that's not clearly for medical purposes can disqualify it.

*Duct tape would be a better choice but they might not see that as "medical equipment"
