Revisiting Lansinoh and its interaction with Silicone

Post by ariana » Fri Dec 31, 2010 12:42 pm

Hi,

I have been having to change nasal pillows on my Swift FX very frequently, and am currently trying going up a size because leaks have gotten worse no matter what I do. I use Lansinoh to help seal the pillows to my nares, and I wash the pillows in an extremely mild all natural liquid soap solution. I am aware of questions about the manufacturing practices on the pillows, but...

I just spoke with the person at CPAP.com when ordering my pillows, and she sounded doubtful that Lanshinoh is actually inert when used with the silicone pillows. Will try citrus wipes to clean my new pillows in case my liquid soap may be a problem, but now I wonder: How do we know for sure that Lanolin does not cause Silicone to break down?

Many thanks for any insights on this, and happy new year to everyone online. To any I have not thanked personally for advice offered, please know that I bless you many times each day!

Warmly,
ariana

ariana, have you also tried this which seems to be heavier:

I would try to cover a set of pillows with this ointment and see what happens to it over a week. Does it lose its elasticity or get stained?

I've used Lansinoh every single night for the last 4 months and my pillows are fine. I get about 8 weeks out of a set of pillows so far.... They do not get discolored from the lanolin... and from what I've learned here, 8 weeks is pretty standard for pillows with or without Lansinoh. Apparently, ResMed uses a different manufacturer for the pillows these days, and they are not as good quality as those folks used in the past. Since many insurances replace pillows on a monthly or every 3 mo. cycle, they aren't going to remedy the poorer quality anytime soon..... Cha-ching for ResMed!

A lot of people find Lanisoh or other creams helpful for getting a seal, but I find the opposite. I do best with the "naked" pillow. Have you tried that?

Initially I used the nasal pillows without Lanshinoh, but later added that and mouth taping--I like surgical tape, comes off easily in the morning--and more recently, PapCap, in an effort to keep leaks low. Do plan to try "naked" pillows again when I get my new Medium size pillows.

The Walgreens' Lansinoh product for diaper rash mentioned a couple of posts above is tempting, but I am concerned because one of the ingredients looks like a petroleum type product, which I understand degrades the Silicone material. Now you've got me thinking about what other all natural, non-petroleum product might work. Will report if I come up with anything.

I'm not sure what you are doing to get short life out of your pillows, but I've not found Lansinoh to degrade mine in any way. And it definitely provides a better seal.

How long are you trying to use your pillows? They don't last forever.

So I gather that at least in the experience of people responding here, Lansinoh does not degrade the nasal pillows. I, too, wonder what I am doing wrong. I get about two weeks on them before having to add my equivalent of O rings, small elastic pony tail wraps double wrapped on the "stems," which buys me another couple of weeks. After that the leaks go up and the sleep quality goes down.

Soap - try just rinsing them off or leaning with a wet cloth. It's definitely not the Lansinoh (its pure lanolin) and maybe the phone person needs to start reading the forum?

I use lansinoh on my Swift LT pillows too. I get about 3-4 weeks per pillow. Then they start leaking real bad. I wipe mine off daily and wash them in warm soapy water weekly. I use dial natural soap. The same soap we have in the bathroom for hand washing.

I use the Headrest and am still on my original pillows -- over a year and half and still going strong (and it was a used mask when I received it so who really knows the true age). I don't use anything to help with sealing and seldom clean.

I tried Ayr gel and the lanolin and didn't like it as I found my seal wasn't as good.
