Nose Mask impossible?

Post by pain32 » Tue Nov 09, 2010 12:35 am

I've been trying the nose mask but it's really difficult to breathe through my nose- it gives me
a sore throat, I can't fall asleep and makes these snoring noises. Any suggestions? I'm using
an 8.0 pressure

It would be helpful if you list your equipment and and your nasal mask type under "User Control Panel". Do you have a humidifier? Did you try on a variety of masks? Some people swear by nasal pillows. If you have a humidifier, I would recommend that you increase the humidification slightly each night. If increasing your humidification does not help, I would speak to your doctor. I hope this helps. Laurie

Hi laurie
try using a spray called AVAMS about 20 min before going to bed my nose is always blocked and this helps to free it up giving me a chance to doze of just check with your local quack to make sure its ok for you to use it

Hello pain32 --

I, too, had similar problems with a nasal mask. I used one during my titration, then tried for three days once I got my equipment. I found I couldn't tolerate it. It was imperative for me to use the machine and mask every night/all night, so my RT suggested that I try a full face mask. That's what I did and never went back.

I did try a nasal again a few months later at the insistence of the owner of my DME. I gave it a good try, but had the same problems and switched back to my full face mask within a few hours that same night.

I don't know if this would be an option, but there are people that simply cannot tolerate the nasal mask. Full face masks are a good alternative for those people.

Perhaps you are breathing out through your mouth. If so you are loosing therapy that way besides drying out you mouth and throat. You should try taping or a chin strap. Do a search on both, there are lots of suggestions.

I've found that using nasal pillows actually helps keep my nose clearer, but I also have the mouth part of the mask so I can mouthbreath if needed instead of turning my mouth into a desert.
