Anyone tried light therapy?

Post by pulseoxstore » Fri Nov 05, 2010 9:03 pm

I have been using a bluelight now for almost 2 years and have been wondering if anyone else has tried this. I got this and was skeptical that it would do anything but it was inexpensive and I figured what the heck. I don't use CPAP but have an awful time getting up in the morning. I started using it when the time changed and it made it much easier to get up and going in the morning. I wake up a few minutes earlier and watch tv with the light slightly to the side and just glance over at it every once in a while. After 15 or 20 minutes, I feel ready to go. I have taken it every time I travel and have only went a few nights without it.

Here is a little info from Apollo's website:
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), or the Winter Depression is caused by the shorter winter days and the long cold winter nights. Traditional treatment for winter depression has been light therapy with a 10,000 lux, light box or SAD lamp. However, new research shows that specific wavelength technology (BLUEWAVE) may be more effective at treating Seasonal Affective Disorder. Bright light has also been studied for depression, sleep disorders and bipolar depression.

Light therapy devices are based on the age old healing benefits of light. Light therapy devices can help for an assortment of ailments including seasonal affective disorder (S.A.D.), and even sleep, bipolar or depression disorders. Light therapy can also help increase energy during traveling through time zones or changing shifts at work.

Researchers have discovered that a very specific range of blue light is the most effective (wavelength) in treating these disorders. The goLITE is a patent-pending product that delivers only the most effective wavelengths, which means a more convenient treatment than traditional 10,000 lux full-spectrum light therapy devices. Blue light therapy is not only more convenient, but easier on the eyes. Because BLUEWAVE™ light is so effective it is now considered the SAD Light Therapy treatment technology of the future. Apollo's BLUEWAVE™ Technology is the only clinically proven blue light source to treat mood disorders.

I would be interested in hearing if anyone else has had any experience with light therapy.
Thanks,
Kevin

Well, I haven't, but the thing is it's prescribed for depression, and not OSA. You say you're not on Cpap, and I'm wondering why you are on the forum (not that you're unwelcome!). I see that you're apparently an RT, but are you helping a friend sell his lightboxes? Because if you don't have OSA and/or aren't on Cpap, the forum could be the wrong place to be talking about light boxes. It's a Cpap forum, after all.

That is Kevin Cooper of the pulseox store, http://www.pulseoxstore.com/index.html. He also has another member ID and has posted here frequently.

The refurbished blue lights are neat looking and inexpensive, http://www.pulseoxstore.com/Light-Therapy.html

I am tempted to buy one, but the house is already full of gadgets.

I try to take advantage of some early morning sun quite often.

I actually started my website after getting on cpaptalk and reading some of the posts about recording oximeters. I had no idea that downloadable oximeters were inexpensive enough for anyone to buy and use on their own. I like bouncing ideas off of CPAPtalk users because every time I post something, I get tons of response.
Light therapy is for seasonal affective disorder but it is also used to treat other conditions as well as circadian rhythm issues. That is why I use one. And it does work. Philips Respironics bought out Apollo Health and is now producing these blue lights.

I use light therapy in the winter months and find it helps. I am an early riser and it dark for a couple of hours after I get up.

I feel more energized when I use it during cold dark winter mornings. Mine is called the "Golite" and I have used it for about 3 years now.

Dear Kevin,

I have never used this light, but think that I might need to. I definetly have SADs. When I go to work in the dark and come home in the dark, I feel very tired, like I want to hybernate like a bear - just sleep and sleep! I also feel like I want to eat more. Terrible! I will go to your web site and check it out.

Thanks!

I have one in my very expensive collection of stuff I've bought to try to make me feel better. I didn't think it helped at all, but only tried it for a few months. I think I'll get it out and try it again. You have to have your eyes open for it to work and that is a hard thing to do when trying to wake up.

Kevin is without a doubt the most helpful person I have met on the internet. He goes way above and beyond every time you need him.

I can say YES and YES! to that, Kevin is a very kind person. I bought my oximeter from him and I need to say that I wish all the sellers would be at least a bit like him, more than excellent care. Thanks Kevin.

I have been doing light therapy since June. My useage hours/sleep per night is trending longer and longer, even with daylight getting slowly shorter.

However, I use the 10,000 lumens at a researched angle (NIH studies) got mine from SunBox Company.

I haven't seen any studies on the newer blue lights, so I went with tested and heavily researched method.

Glad I finally was able to purchase!! I am hopeful for better functioning when SAD is worst for me in Feb/March will keep you posted!
