Pulse Oximeter covered by insurance?
I know that good fingertip pulse oximeters, such as those by Nonin, are not terribly expensive, but I am wondering if insuance typically will cover one for sleep apnea patients. Has anyone had any experience with this?

Well I'd love it if it were true also. But I don't think that an insurance company will pay for anything that isn't a certified medical device. Maybe if you had a great policy they would pay for one if your Dr. Rx'd it. My experience with most insurance companies, however, is that they will spend more money to deny a claim than to pay one.

Re: Pulse Oximeter covered by insurance?
well I am going to check into it. If my Doctor writes a script for it--why wouldn't my health insurance pay for it? I work full time and pay for my health care plan--so I feel that if there is a script--they should pay for at least part of it. I have Cigna ( I am not on a free health care plan) so I will let you know when I find out

Re: Pulse Oximeter covered by insurance?
Probably a question for your insurance company/agent...
Policies vary, so even is someone here DID have one covered, that means very little for the rest--unless you happen to have exactly the same company and coverage.

Re: Pulse Oximeter covered by insurance?
Not likely, as they are not a medical necessity. Your doctor can have the test done on you and charge them or your DME can. Some things in life you just have to take the responsibility for. I'd like the doctor to write me a script for a new truck to go to the doctors office, but the ins wouldn't pay for that either. Jim

I junked out my former transportation ( 3 @ 1978 Ford Cars), and bought a new 2009 GMC Sierra Crew Cab, it pained me that I couldn't get someone else to pay for it. (INS) My doctor saw it in the parking lot and approved, but I still had to pay for it.sleeplessinaz wrote:Really Goofproof??? Maybe you should get better insurance coverage!! LOL!

On the Pulse Ox, the other doctor wrote the script for it but said the INS wouldn't pay for it, I told him I wouldn't expect then to. Didn't even need the script, just a CC.
It's a sad commentary growing old, being a mechanic for 50 years and no longer being able to do repairs on your own vehicle, having to rely on others to do it for you, knowing that they don't have the training or knowledge or desire to do it correctly.
After driving others old cars, I finally got my first new vehicle, it will drive me to my grave for sure, in style. Jim

I couldn't even get the "Cash for Junkers Rebate, my Cars were 5 years too old, dispite the fact I could have driven them ten more years if I had my health. So for a reward for not getting the rebate, I bought it with the bigger engine and in the heavy duty configeration.LinkC wrote:I think new trucks are covered under Obamacare...

Re: Pulse Oximeter covered by insurance?
Pulse OXs are easy to purchase on line. No RX needed as far as I know. I have purchased several as have other health care co workers. You can get a good one for about $70. I think they are a wise investment, I have suggested them to my patients who are on oxygen so they can monitor what their levels are daily. Helps them monitor their activities better.
