Silly Forum Use Question - How to use Quotes?

OK, dumb question, I know, but I don't get it and I want to learn! How does one use the Quote feature? How about if you don't want to include the entire post, but just a sentence here and a paragraph there? Really, I can tie my shoelaces and I should get points for being able to get into the "forbidden zone" (just kidding) on my machine. Thanks so much! Hugs, Laurie P.S. well, when you hit reply scroll down a little, you will see other peoples posts, click on EXPAND VIEW to see them better..

If you want to include an entire post, go down and click the quote button in thier post field..

that will put it in YOUR field..

if you dont want all of it... cut and paste parts you do want, pasted in YOUR field, highlight it and click the quote icon above YOUR reply field.

at least that is what I have been doing, but Im a computer idiot..

Two answers on your quote question.

1) To quote with the name of the person who wrote the stuff you want to quote, hit the "Quote" button by the post. It will add an ="username= inside the [ quote ] command at the start of the quote. The quote will continue to where you see the [ /quote ] at the end of the quoted material in the Post A Reply editing box where you write your reply post. You can use the mouse to select any text that you want to delete.

2) If you have used a mouse to select text from a post that you want to quote, you should copy it with the standard "copy" command on your computer [on a pc, I think that's control-C, on a mac it's command-c]. Once you're in the Post A Reply editing window, click the Quote button at the top of the editing menu in the Post A Reply composition window. It will automatically put [ quote ][ /quote ] into your reply and place the cursor between the start and end of the quote commands. You can then use the paste command on your computer [typically control-v or command-v] to paste the quoted material in your post. Add your comments either before or after the [ quote ]quoted material[ /quote ] commands.

Actually, it's not so intuitive... I still struggle with how to make lists, as it always throws me that there is a "List" and a "List=".

Anyway, if you're in the screen where you are posting a reply, you can highlight the text you want to quote (either in the current screen or a different window), then right click to copy it. Then push the Quote button above the screen you're typing in. It will deliver the word Quote in square brackets and the word Quote with a slash in front of it, also in brackets. Put your cursor between the two sets of brackets, right click, and paste. When you preview the screen, you should see it quoted.

Alternatively, If you're not in the Post a Reply screen, and you hit the quote button, it will put you into the Post a Reply screen and it will quote all the text from that post. You could cut out the parts you don't want.

... OK, dumb question, I know, but ...

It's not a dumb question at all. As noted, you can use the QUOTE button. You can also highlight the text and click quote. I usually use the quote button, then add the [ quote = "User Name" ] ... (I added spaces so it does not try to add quotes) and the matching ... [ / quote ] to the text. It helps folks reading the post to see what I am answering.

And the process of doing this is NOT intuitive unless you happen to have used various computer mark up languages (for documentation), or HTML, or bulletin boards. If you have many years of that type of work, it's very obvious. Otherwise, it takes a while to wrap your head around the process.

But once you get the hang of it, it's like riding a bicycle. You always remember how. You might take a tumble or two, but it's fairly easy to get back into the groove.
