Resmed Vpap Auto 25, does it auto adjust to a new user

My friends grandpa died a few months ago and had just received a resmed vpap auto 25 that they want to get rid of, if we buy this will it automatically adjust like it says or do i need to take it in and have it set, or can I set it, thanks

An auto's an auto, but still needs to be set at a prescribed range of pressure, e.g. if the script calls for 10, a likely setting would be 8 or 9 for the low number, and 12 or 13 for the higher one. But you need to know how to set it - it doesn't come preprogrammed, and unless you know what the doctor ordered, you could either set it too low to be effective (for you) or unnecessarily high, which can cause definite problems. Can you elaborate more on who the patient is, whether they were tested for apnea, what pressure(s) was advised by the doctor and in general whatever else you can put down to help us help you? We can help you adjust it though, no problem.

You can run it in full auto mode, and see what it comes up with. When I did that, I found that it came up with pressure levels far below what I needed, and I felt like a zombie after a few days. Folks who are on BiPAP are often on these more advanced machines because they have a more unusual or difficult to treat case. I'd really suggest starting out at your titrated pressures, and then adjusting from there. But if your titrated pressures work well, then why bother messing with success?

Some local DME providers will not even touch a CPAP that they didn't sell. However, it would be worth your while to take that VPAP Auto 25 to your local provider since they already have a copy of your current CPAP script and they should be willing to set it to run in straight CPAP mode at your scripted pressure for you. My local DME provider has done this for me.

And .... there is always the opportunity to obtain a copy of the Clinicians Manual (not the Users Manual, the Clinicians Manual) for the Resmed VPAP Auto 25 and set the pressure range in CPAP or APAP mode yourself. If you opt to go the APAP mode route, it is wisest to set the low end of the pressure range at or 1 cm below your current set CPAP pressure and the top of the pressure range at 2-3 cms above your current titrated pressure. You seldom need or want more than a 5 cm pressure range in APAP mode.

I hate to throw a monkey wrench in things but the thought occurred since the VPAP Auto 25 had only recently been provided to the grandfather, quite likely it was provided thru Medicare. Medicare ONLY purchases on a 13 month capped rental. So .... if it isn't more than 13 months old ... your friends could find themselves stuck w/a healthy bill from the provider if they sell it to you.

I will mention that to them and see if they know , but i'm guessing that's where it came from and it has been less than the 13 months, thanks for the info.

Looks like it clear of medicare, came thru the VA, so I'm gonna give it a shot, hope I can get it set right but if not at least I know you good folks are here.

Just got the machine and slept with it for the first night, looks like it is set with a 6-16, my high number is 14 so I figured the 16 was ok, don't know what my low # is and couldn't figure out how to change the settings as of last night. It also says Spont is the mode, the book never said what this is or how to change it, the breathing in to out makes for a huge contrast and was hard to get used to. My wife said that the machine wasn't kicking on at times during the night, she would put her hand on my chest and I would take a few breaths with the machine on the exhale cycle, then it would kick back in, is it supposed to do that and is there a way I can set this machine to a regular CPAP mode with constant pressure if I need to, thanks.

Finally found the manual online and it's helping me out, switched to Auto from Spont which should be interesting since I fall asleep to the settling pressure and then it adjust once i'm asleep, thanks for all the help.
