First Night in the Books
First Night in the Books
My first night of CPAP therapy is the books. I'd say I had a good night for a first time user. The biggest adjustment for me has been getting used to a tether and having it drag around with me or disconnect to go potty. I got in bed about 9:30 and read 10 chapters of the book of John for my bible study. Lights out about 10:30. Dozed till about midnight then fell asleep. I woke up at 3 and my wife accidentally woke me at 5. Rolled out of bed about 7:20 (I live close to work).
Total time -> 10:24
AHI -> 6.7
This AHI is a bit high for me, I was mild to begin with. AHI breakdown was OSA 1.7, Centrals 5. I had 1 central a night in baseline so 5 an hour is a big increase in centrals. I could not see what my events looked like (do I have to det a week of data to see detailed graphs?) No hypopneas so I may be a future APAP mode user but I will wait to work with Pacific RTs on that.
So all in all a good night. I feel more mentally awake and oh yeah, I dreamed last night.

You have a good start! You can look at the detail by selecting it in the reports menu and specifying the day(days). Assuming you have resscan software.

The first night, or even the first week, is not a very good indication of what to expect. As you get used to the machine and mask you'll improve. My first week's AHI was good, but it improved week by week until, like last night, it averages less than 1.0. Last night was 0.6. Detailed data is collected from the get-go. All you need to do is get the software to download it. I recommend you read through the info on this site http://www.osahelp.com/ so you can see what the data should look like.

Re: First Night in the Books
Centrals is 5? I thought (and I might be mistaken - I am often so) that AHI was the total of Apnea Index + Hypopnea Index. (index being # per hour slept - an average, if you will).
Some of the good people here will tell you this (and I find them to be good and accurate). The numbers don't tell the whole story. Someone can have 0.0 AHI and still feel like crap. Someone can have 10 and still feel great. Of course, the idea is to get the AHI to less than 5, but that also is affected by leak rate.
Welcome B_4. You sunk my battleship!

What were your pressure settings? What was your leak rate?

Re: First Night in the Books
My 95th percentile leak was 13.2 L/min with a max of 157.2 L/min.
The max is probably from adjusting the mask while it was on or something. I also did have a few snores....
I am waiting for a call from the RT to discuss the same topic.

Re: First Night in the Books
13.2 @95% is well within limits. 24 @95% is considered a bad leak rate.
157? Do you have your AutoSet to consider the mask type in the calculation? It's one of the clinician's controls.

Re: First Night in the Books
The 157 is from erly in the night. It was blowing and I took it off to tweak a strap and put it back on.
The RT thinks I am prbably opening my mouth so the chin strap is in the mail.

Hey, B_4. What pressure (number, generally between 4 and 20) are you set at?

Howdy, B_4, and congrats on doing well on your first night! Don't worry about your numbers too much right now; they will improve as you adjust. You're off to an excellent start!

Thanks Pearl. Night 3 tonight. I'm adjusting well but I had a slightly higher AHI last night. 7.6 mostly all centrals....
