I like the smell of a new mask. I suspect, like a new car, the smell goes away after a while.

For me the smell turned me off from trying the mask. I did notice that after sitting out for a while the smell is now gone. I soaked and washed it several times and could not rid the mask of the smell though.

I got a really bad one, too. It smelled like mildewed rags. I soaked it many times in different solutions and it still smelled so bad I could not imagine ever putting it close enough to my nose to even try it on. It's been a couple of years, I guess I could get it out of the drawer and see if it still stinks.

The Mirage SoftGel mask had no odor at all.

When you get a new mask, hose, or filters it is a good idea to open the bag and allow them to air out to get rid of any odors. After airing them out, they should be stored in something that is not air tight until you use them. For filters or masks, you could just cut some holes in the plastic bags to let them air out and leave them in the holy bags for storage.

You get the smell for FREE, it's part of China's marketing plan, they figure if they smell the U.S. consumers will buy less of them, then they won't have to build a factory in Mexico too.

The bad news is after ripping us off with masks that break at the clips, they have got it right and they work pretty well. I deal with the smell by opening the package and letting the mask gass off it's problems for a few days. after that you just have to tough up and use it. As your body smells something, after a while it pays less mind to the smell. By the time the mask almost stops smelling, it time to break in another STINKY. The smell seems harmless, just offensive.
