Sleep Loss Limits Fat Loss

Post by roster » Tue Oct 05, 2010 10:07 am

DALLAS - Richard Ellis is at a crossroads--he's not sleeping well and his doctor told him to lose weight.

A sleep study unveiled the mystery of his problem--sleep apnea has him holding his breath 20 times a minute--his nights are restless and his days are a drag.

"You're just either tired or just flat," Richard said. You just sit down with somebody and you're just nodding off--it's crazy you know, what's wrong with me?"

According researchers at the University of Chicago's General Clinic Research Center it's hard to burn fat when you don't get enough sleep.

Scientists put ten people on a diet spanning two 14- day sessions--during the adequate sleep weeks they lost 3.1 pounds of fat while during the sleep deprived weeks they lost an average of 1.3 pounds of fat.

Dr. Nabeel Farah said the math is easy.

"The weight loss was more profound in terms of fat loss in the group that had adequate sleep time."

Dr. Farah calls the study interesting because researchers also found that during inadequate sleep the volunteers also had high levels of the hunger hormone grehlin.

I see we read similar research. Hopefully some of our doctors and health care providers will read and learn.

Tallies with my personal experience...I get a good 8 hrs and I see a wt loss, less than that or a bad night even if 8 hrs and it's likely that I'll see a gain. Seems independent of what I eat or how much I exercise, or at any rate a more important factor. Maybe we hoseheads are acutely sensitive to the effects of sleep.

Before I started CPAP I went to the gym almost every day. I did not lose the weight like I thought I should. 2 weeks after being on CPAP, I lost 9 lbs and did not hit the gym once! The doctor stated that when you have OSA the body does not break down the fats, suguars ( why diabetes is so affected with OSA)etc. the body is too busy trying to stay alive. Once you get the OSA under control, the metabolism can go back to work like its suppose to. Unfortunately, working nights and doing sleep studies i more than gained that weight back, so time to hit the gym again! Good post!
