Dry Nose and Throat

Post by Starone » Sun Oct 03, 2010 6:55 pm

Every day i wake up in the morning after 4 hours of sleep and with my nose dry and congested. And my throat dry.
I use nasal decongestant right before bed along with a saline wash and its fine. But in the morning i wake up. and have to do it again and then go back to bed.

Which causes intereputed sleep for about 15 minutes.
its no fun.

What can i do? i use humidifier and still no help

A nasal decongestant dries out your nose. CPAP therapy does as well. I'd be very cautious using both together. I've done that before by mistake and had rather painful, dry and irritated sinuses.

Should you have really dry nose and throat it is likely caused by one of two things. The first is mouth breathing and the second is not enough humidity.

THey should have tested for mouth breathing during your sleep apnea test. I haven't had to deal with this but plenty of people on here have. Just search for their tips. In terms of the humidity, does your CPAP have a humidifier? If so, what setting are you using and where do you live? Living somewhere like say Portland with lots of rain and humidity probably means that you don't need a lot. Living in Phoenix, you want it maxed.

If you have a humidifier, then fill up the water supply as much as your machine allows and set it on the highest level. Also, stop with the decongestant. Try that for a week or so and see if that helps. If it does, back down the dehumidifier until you've gotten to the lowest setting that still works.

Turn up the humidity and that should help . I also agree that mouth breathing can also add to the problem

I vote for mouth breathing too - happens to a lot of us once Cpap is started, even if it wasn't a factor beforehand (all that nice air being pumped in!). The ideal answer is a full face mask, but you can at least test things out by using a 3M micropore tape (any drugstore) about 2" long - wear it horizontally - and maybe an inch or two wide to make sure it does the job. Sounds scary but a lot of people use it all the time (I don't but have done so as a backup). And of course your therapy will actually be effective if I'm right.

Starone, it sounds like you're mouth breathing. Time to look at the fixes for that, including taping, chinstraps, and full-face masks. If all your lovely therapy air is escaping out of your mouth it isn't getting to do it's job, so it isn't helping you, and I know it's important to you to have optimal therapy because I've read your other threads. This is a problem you can fix quickly and easily.

Sounds like rebound to me. But I'm not a doctor, didn't even sleep at a Holiday Inn last nite.
