Big Increase in Events

Post by Sandra » Mon Sep 27, 2010 5:19 am

Hi, on therapy for about 2 months, and have been very pleased with the results. Events really low, from 0-3 per night. However the last 5 nights or so, events have gone way up, like 25+ (AHI 3-4, huge jump for me) majority being obstructive. There are virtually no mask leaks. Now, I have a cold..a week ago I was congested but nose has been clear for awhile, so I'm pretty sure I'm breathing through my nose (nasal mask). However I'm coughing a fair bit - will that give false event reports? I believe the events could be real, as while I don't feel super fatigued like pre-cpap, I do have less oomph and have started to experience that cranky feeling, scattered thinking/forgetfulness again.
My pressure is set at 9, EPR 3 full time. Wondering if I should try tweaking the settings a wee bit, see if it makes a difference. If that seems like a suitable idea, which of the 2 would I adjust first?
Side note: I have to testify in court this Thurs/Fri, and it's really important for me and to the case to be sharp and on the ball!

Might be worth a try. You could try bumping your pressure up one centimeter to 10 and changing EPR to "2" to see if that shows any benefits.

Thanks for your reply. If I can increase pressure by increments of .2, should I creep up more slowly than a full 1?

I think I'd try the full centimeter first. You can always make modifications.

Coughing may be disrupting your sleep, and confusing the machine. While it could be obstructions causing your scattered feeling etc. it could also simply be the lack of sleep.
Have you had that cough checked? Is it something you are used to? Are you sure it's not something with your bronchii or your lungs? Your nose may be clear, but if your lower airway is affected you're having a harder time getting the amount of oxygen your body needs.

I'm very sensitive to pressure changes, and tend to raise pressure more slowly --

Hi, I would not increase your pressure - if you're inadvertently mouth breathing, it'll only make it worse. Can you try taping for a night or so to see if you 'really' need a full face mask? It sounds very possible, even without having had a cold.
