New sleep study ordered!

Post by Mimmie » Wed Sep 15, 2010 10:55 am

I have met my deductible for this year and I want a new machine but before my new insurance will pay they want a new sleep study done. Do they think that the apnea will be gone, that something will have changed for the better since 4 years ago and won't have to buy a new machine? Will I have to do like the original study and spend most of the night with no machine? I will not sleep more than 5 minutes without smothering. I am NOT looking forward to this at all.

It will probably cost the insurance company more for the sleep study than for a new CPAP. However, if they are will in to pay for it ....go for it. After 4 years you may find out that you need some adjustments.

The sleep study will probably be a "titration" study where you bring your mask and they hook you up for the night. They then will run tests to see if your prseeure needs changed etc. I am pretty sure they are not going to make you sleep without a machine.

Let us know how it goes. I am going to ask for a titration study since it has been 3 years for me and I lost weight since I started so I want to see if my pressure needs altered.

If you do go for another sleep test and if it's only for one night then yes they'll probably want you to at least sleep half the night off a machine and half on, or maybe the full night off the machine.

It won't be good, you'll probably awake a lot but think of it another way, the tech will probably be monitoring you and can instantly see that you probably still need CPAP, ask you to put your machine on at your prescribed pressure and then see the difference it makes. If your machine is working they may or may not suggest a new machine, it depends I guess on how old it is.

I don't know how the insurance works in the US as in the UK some of us get machines for free on the NHS but some like me have to pay for them and the NHS won't pay a penny. I would think that if you've met your deductible then you could buy one if the insurance company will sign off on it.

Thanks
Dave

Yes, just found out today that it will be the whole show all over again. I have to come in and get all hooked up with all the bells and whistles at 8:30 p.m. Then I will be suffocated until 1:00 a.m. They will finally put the machine on me and I will get to sleep until 5:00 a.m. Then I have to drive an hour back home, take a shower to remove all the gunk from my hair, get dressed and drive 2 hours to sit all day for a family surgery. It's going to be glorious. I am so excited.
