NFL player Percy Harvin's comment on his CPAP

Hi everyone,
I was checking out nfl.com and came across this story. I read that he had been diagnosed with sleep apnea and migraines after collapsing during practice but thought his comments were pretty cool. Too bad they arent printing these everywhere. They are saying he, "uses a device that pumps air into his nose to regulate his breathing while he is sleeping"

Here are his comments:
"It's a 100 percent difference," Harvin said. "I'm not waking up groggy. I'm waking up feeling refreshed and ready to go. So like I said, hopefully that's it. It's been a blessing," he said. "Had I never been in the hospital from the start, they'd have never figured out that it's sleep apnea. I probably would still be going through the same thing now. Like I said, everything happens for a reason. A lot of doctors think that's what it was, from the lack of sleep. They seem real confident, so of course that makes me confident."

What we don't know is if he was given a good machine, is having any mask problems, or if he knows he can be pro-active with his own therapy. Too bad he doesn't know about this forum!!

What amazes me is that he is a premier player, makes a lot of money, and has access to the best doctors on the planet, yet he went almost his entire life without being diagnosed. If someone like Percy Harvin can have his OSA overlooked, I wonder how many average people complain of symptoms every day yet sleep issues are never considered by their doctors.

I agree, John. I'd go even further and venture a bet that if the entire population of the United States were given a PSG sleep study, at least half would be found to need CPAP.

What's also amazing to me is that -- by now -- a PSG sleep study is not routinely ordered by every cardiologist in the country for every patient they have.

i wonder does his heart still stops in his sleep?does that mean he also at risk for afib?

I remember a few years ago when Reggie White passed away. Our CPAP referrals increased from all of the attention that the media put on sleep apnea. Too bad it takes someone famous dying to bring the attention needed.
