Toronto area oxygen concentrators?

Post by torontoCPAPguy » Fri Aug 27, 2010 3:14 pm

I have just had another look at my original prescription from my sleep lab study and the respirologist. Amazingly, it says CPAP 5cmH2O and then says (preprinted Rx form) check mark, check mark, "+ + O2". I have to believe that this means I was to have been provided with O2 in addition to the CPAP machine. This is totally bizarre as after six months of playing around it turns out that is exactly what I figure my 'golden bullet' is to resolve my sleep issues. Sic. Go figure.

Anyone know of a supplier in the Greater Toronto Area that works with ADP or MOH that supplies Oxygen concentrators on anything asides from rental?

Thanks in advance.

BTW, I just ordered an oxygen concentrator from SE MEDICAL... never fails.

MediGas is the last supplier in the world that ANYONE wants to contact to be honest. Firstly, their sales ethics leave a whole lot to be desired. I walked out of there on my first visit, recommended by my sleep doctor/clinic (i.e. "You go to MediGas" and we will make an appointment for you there)... well, let's just say I walked out of there with a $1500 VISA bill after the government supposedly paid for my CPAP machine. I did not know any better at the time but I sure would NOT go back there again - that's why I am looking for another supplier. Firstly, MediGas leaves much to be desired in their sales tactics. Secondly, they are less than helpful. Thirdly, they do not sell Oxygen Concentrators - only rent them for about what two months of their rental fee would pay for a top of the line machine stateside. And forthly, taking a look at my original Rx it appears that I was being prescribed O2 in addition to CPAP. They totally ignored the O2 or missed it - it took me a year of misery and hard work to come up with the conclusion that I needed O2 infusion into my air line when I was in REM sleep... no thanks to anyone except those on this board. Ordered a Respironics Everflo Q because it comes with a five year no-questions-asked replacement warranty from SE Medical Supply, is the quietest machine on the market and has an oxygen quality meter all for about $750 delivered to my door in Toronto. In case you did not notice, I will repeat my earlier statement. That represents about TWO MONTHS of rent up here in Toronto - and I am still looking for a firm that will SELL me a Respironics Everflo Q at a reasonable price. The government, I am told, pays for 75% of the rental... don't know what the full details are yet. Would be interested in knowing what opinion is on the Rx and I am going to post a picture of it. Does this Rx show that during REM sleep I am in urgent need of O2? Anyone care to guess at what it is prescribing? I am guessing O2 in addition to CPAP at given pressure.

No, I don't think it's for 02, but has indicated to whoever fills the script that your 02 was low during REM sleep. However, prescribing anyone a pressure of 5 is ridiculous - I don't know anyone who can breathe at that number! What a dork.

After reading Julie's post I'm guessing that the two symbols before O2 are not check marks but are downwards-pointing arrows.

Well, guys, have spent the balance of the day researching this and have discovered:
(a) YES, the Rx says pressure of 5 cmH2O (dork is correct also)
(b) YES, the Rx says low, low (i.e. two downward arrows) O2 during REM sleep

At the end of which I was referred to a specific vendor that ripped me off royally (my rear end still hurts) AND 'have a great life... see 'ya'.

I was given a bottom of the line ResMed Escape CPAP machine and a bill for $1500 on top of the $800 that the government kicked in.

I shortly thereafter purchased two S8 Autoset II's and started reading my data along with a Contec 50E recording oximeter and playing with the pressures because obviously 5 cm is dumb. I am presently in the 11 - 15 range on APAP with EPR of 3 (Exhalation Pressure Relief of -3 cm of whatever pressure is running at the moment) and my AHI is almost 0.0.

HOWEVER, after continued oximetry recordings and getting educated I realize now that oximetry readings indicating SaO2 of under 88% are sufficiently urgent that the Ontario government will supply you with supplemental oxygen at night. Mine dips below 88% every night pretty much and on nights when I am especially tired and sleeping deeply it drops into the 70's. So, long story short, I AM ELIGIBLE FOR SUPPLEMENTAL OXYGEN thru the government assistive devices programme in Ontario. However, the bloody hoops and summersaults that one needs to do in order to get A RENTAL UNIT for one year is ridiculous. REALLY ridiculous. And I am pissed off and I am not going to jump through their hoops. Done deal. Same way that they did not want me to have an APAP machine and the suppliers want $350 for a $50 mask. Stupid, stupid and a ripoff. Want to know where your tax dollars go in Ontario? Remember it's a LIBERAL government and it's time for them to be ousted once and for all.

So, I have ordered a Respironics Everflo Q and have purchased a used backup unit as well. Does not help me when I am travelling much. I will have to deal with that when the time comes or start travelling with a travel trailer. And I will pay for it myself.

End of story. Thanks for your input guys. Thread closed.
