Surgery and cpap

Post by sleepyb » Sun Aug 22, 2010 9:44 pm

I am going in for surgery tomorrow or Tuesday for clumsy not cpap I will be out for awhile after surgery not overnight hopefully though. Do I need to bring my machine? Mask? Since this happened over the weekend in another state I haven't talked to my Dr. or the surgeon yet. I am really nervous about how they will deal with this.

I would highly recommend you bring your CPAP machine and mask... the only surgery I've had where I was told not to bring it was for my deviated septum (impossible to wear after wards etc). It's good to have if they need to use it after you come off intubation etc. Best of luck to you!

Talk to the recovery room charge nurse before you go under. That person is the one who needs to make SURE you are monitored while in recovery (and out cold), that your machine is hooked up properly in there. The problem is not being in 'surgery', where you are monitored very carefully the whole time, it's in the recovery room (if there are going to be any problems).

Just went through this one week ago. Make sure that you insist on it being used after surgery and that everyone knows that you have SA. I ran into the problem that the OR staff didn't want to use it. I had it with me and then they took it back to my wife claiming that I wouldn't need it. I insisted that I have it after wards and finally they relented. I did have it on when I came to which was a relief.

Thank you for all your suggestions. Everything worked out well with both the surgery and the CPAP.

Didn't the doctor discuss this issue with you?
