Hello... Would appreciate any help.

Hello everybody.

I'm 24 years old and seemed to be tired a lot throughout the day. I don't feel fully awake and alive.

I read "The Promise of Sleep" by Dr. Dement and think I can attribute my problems to:

1. Sleep debt
2. Possible sleep apnea.

I know I have sleep debt because I have not been allowing myself 8-9 hours sleep during the workweek (until recently).

I am also worried about possible sleep apnea because I have been told I snore. So, I'm concerned that my snoring may be effecting my sleep.

What would be the most effective route to get a good diagnosis of possible sleep apnea? Should I tape myself on a night of sleep?

Thanks

I am not terribly smart when it comes to this so someone correct me, but snoring is simply a by product of apnea. I am sure people can snore and not have apnea, not sure if it goes the other way as I think most that have apnea snore.

The best way is to go to a sleep clinic and have a sleep study performed. They monitor a whole heck of a lot more than just snoring to make sure they diagnose properly. There could be other things that are causing feelings of sleep depravation I am told such as problems with thyroids, though I do not know much about it other than I had blood work done looking for these problems. Either way a doctors visit is the path you need to take. I just thank (enter appropriate deity here) that I have insurance as this whole process is pretty rough otherwise.

Would most insurance allow a visit to a sleep clinic?

Yes, but you will probably need to contact them and get pre-approval.
I would suggest seeing your GP first and then he/she will probably refer you to a sleep clinic in your area.

I think most insurances will cover a sleep test. I'd advise taking your concerns to your primary care doctor. He/she can then send you to a sleep lab as well as check out other possible causes....

rvsingh,

Recording is an easy first step. Go to WalMart, or Target Staple, or Office Depot or Best Buy and pick up a mini voice activated tape recorder. Put it next to your pillow tonight and see what happens. You'll be shocked at what you hear. Do it today.

This is, however, no replacement for a visit to a certified sleep doctor.

Tiredness can be caused by many things. I thought that perhaps I had apnea (my only symptom was daytime tiredness) so I had a sleep study, which found mild apnea. I got a CPAP, 3 different masks, and found no improvement in my daytime fatigue.

Sorry you had no improvement in your daytime fatigue....but think how much happier your heart and arteries are now that you have CPAP???? That alone is worth the trouble.
