Turbinate electrocautery, is it a good idea?

Post by rosacer » Sun Aug 15, 2010 3:32 pm

Hi, I would like to hear from people who have had a turbinates electrocautery.

My ENT puts me on a waiting list to have turbinates electrocautery. I have permanent rhinitis due to pollution, sometimes seasonal allergy and who knows. I need to push corticosteroid spray at least once a day everyday on my sinuses to keep it open and been able to breath at night.

The ENT says electrocautery will reduce swollen. The problem is I read 50% of people who have this treatment finishes with dry sinuses, unable to feel the air passing through the sinuses which gives them the sensation of a stuffy nose. Does this affects the smell sense?

I had turbinates electrocautery 25 years ago and what I can say is as far as I remember I have already have the feeling of a moderate stuffy nose, if it is the result of the electrocautery I can't say it's too far to know if that was the cause.

Please let me now your opinion, it will be highly appreciated.
