Clarification before new Sleep Study

Post by spc2005 » Fri Nov 11, 2005 9:06 am

Hello All,

I'm just needing a little clarification on something before my titration sleep study this weekend ...

I already have a prescription for a CPAP machine, but do I need to ask my doctor for a new prescription if I want to order the Respironics REMstar auto c-flex or the Resmed S8 Vantage auto machines?

In other words, do I need a prescription for an auto that is different than my current prescription? I don't see anywhere on my current prescription (although it is a fax copy) that specifies "CPAP" or "APAP."

I'm just a little confused about this ... any help is appreciated!

You do not need a special prescription for an APAP. There is no separate billing code for APAP, so many DMEs will not want to provide you with one since it costs them more and they can't get reimbursed more. This is why I bypassed the traditional DME route and made my purchase through cpap.com. My prescription did say APAP, but the local DMEs came up with every lie they could make up, saying my insurance would not pay for an auto or autos don't work or are "experimental." Some said that they just plain could not get one.

Ask a lot of questions BEFORE you have the R/T come out to your house. If they are not willing to provide what you want, I would look elsewhere.

Sincerely,
wading thru the muck of the sleep study/DME/Insurance money pit!
