Ambien

Post by HeidiHose » Sun Oct 30, 2005 7:55 pm

I'm curious...I've heard that people with OSA should not use sleep aids. I've been having lots of trouble sleeping and adjusting to CPAP, and my family doc prescribed Ambien for me. It works like a charm!

So, why not?

My sleep doc had no problem with prescribing ambien for me. Look at the prior posts and I think you will find that people have feelings both ways, but I can't remember that anyone linked CPAP and ambien as being a dangerous combination. Only a general feeling about taking sleeping meds.

I thinks it the whole philosiphy of "if you don't need it, don't take it". I haven't read or seen any studies showing negative relationship between sleep meds and CPAP, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything.

I do know that some sleep meds don't let you sleep naturally, as in REM stages 1-4. CPAP stops the apneas from happening, but you also have to get into deep REM and Stages 3-4 to really start feeling better.

Ambien Addicting?

For a perspective on Ambien, go to yahoogroups.com and then to ambien addicts.
Many people here give their perspective on Ambien. Some are very frightening.
Most started and found out they could not get off it.
It causes rebound insomnia and is an ever spiraling trip.
There is a new formulation, Ambien CR that releases it to keep a person asleep when the rebound usually kicks in- about 4 hours after prolonged use.
It will be interesting to see how this affects usage in general and how the later release time will affect daytime drowsiness due to it being in the system when you are supposed to be awake.
I vote for seeking ways and habits to sleep naturally. It is not nice to fool mother nature. She comes back with a vengeance,
