Product Challenge Results: A New Gel CPAP Mask Champ

Post by johnnygoodman » Tue May 25, 2010 7:21 am

Howdy CPAPtalkers,

The Nasal Gel CPAP Mask title fight between the Philips Respironics ComfortGel and the Resmed SoftGel is complete. Here are the results:

http://softgel-comfortgel.cpaptalk.com/

This was a very competitive match up in which both products received above average rankings in most or all individual categories. It seems you can no longer win a Product Challenge with a good mask, it has to be great. All of us involved in bringing the Product Challenge to you love this trend. Better products for everyone!

Here are other big take aways we've compiled after reading through and distilling down participant comments:
  • SoftGel won big in the quietness category. We think this was a major factor in final vote.
  • For most, the SoftGel's ability to hold a seal outperformed the ComfortGel's
  • The majority preferred the ComfortGel's style of headgear clips
  • Many were concerned with the ComfortGel's durability
  • Participants liked the SoftGel's MicroFit Dial Forehead adjustment
  • The SoftGel was considered bulkier and heavier but more comfortable
  • A few users reported a squeaky noise from the SoftGel Swivel
Thank you to all who participated and to everyone who enrolled. We can't do it without your support and extremely thankful for all the kind words and participation!

Read the full results to hear from the participants in their own words. Also the size of each mask they tried is listed with their comments to help you related to their experience.

I'm due for a new mask, and that's the one I decided on even before the results were posted. Can't wait to try it!

the comfort gell attachment clips for the headgear broke far too easily and respironics obviously didnt care, finally they redesigned the ball joint holders, but years too late, I would never buy any of their CPAPs but their comfort gell is still the best mask for me that Ive found, ai dont know of any other nose only mask that can be resized to the wearers face
australian, anxiety and insomnia, a CPAP user since 1995, self diagnosed after years of fatigue, 2 cheap CPAPs and respironics comfortgell nose only mask. not one of my many doctors ever asked me if I snored

Does anyone know if ResMed will be coming out with a 'Full Face' SoftGel?

This pretty well mirrors my experience with both of these masks. I find the seal of the SoftGel to be more comfortable BUT, I have to wake up once every night to wipe off my face. This restores the seal. I don't have this problem with the ComfortGel. Both masks are pretty quiet with the SoftGel being just a touch more quiet. The vent system of the SoftGel is pure genius. It's completely unobtrusive. Both are easy to clean. Oddly, the ComfortGel is as effective at a slightly lower pressure than the ComfortGel. It's also ALOT lighter. Because I haven't found a way to wear it without irritating the bridge of my nose, I wear the SoftGel and deal with its weight and issues with seal.

I haven't used the ComfortGel but I used the ComfortFusion quite a bit.
I also used the Mirage SoftGel quite a bit and found exactly the results that you did...
Very quiet; very heavy; very soft and comfortable; very big; and in the end not a great seal at lower pressures that I use.
Also the SoftGel became softer with higher heat and humidity of the S9 with sweat/moisture buildup.

Like the mask... just doesn't work well for me as a side-sleeper.
