Still struggling with inconsistent leaks....from H3i

Post by Country4ever » Wed May 19, 2010 9:59 am

As I've posted before, my leak rate has been way too high for several months. It seemed to start suddenly last January. A couple weeks ago, someone suggested it might be my humidifier. I took it apart and cleaned everything really well including the gasket, and then taped all the connections. My leak rate for a week was incredibly low after that! Then it started getting too high again.
I cleaned and re-taped everything again. Leak rate really low for 4 days days and then started going up again.
Don't you agree that this is pointing to something funky with the humidifier? For 4 months, my leak rate was never anywhere near this low.

I've checked the whole thing out and there are no chips or cracks. The only thing it might be is the gasket. Have any of you ever just changed that gasket?
I called the company, but they weren't any help. (I sort of knew that would happen). All he said was "send it in and we'll look at it."
So.....my question is, don't you think I can say its the humidifier if my leak numbers get lower than ever for a period of time after I do all this stuff to it?
I'm trying to not have to order a new humidifier, as I'm thinking about going to an S9 machine soon.
Thanks for your insights!
(no....no software).

Its possible, and IMO much more likely, it is the taped connections which are at the root cause of your problem.

I've never had a need to tape any connection in the air circuit is over 6 years of using a variety of CPAP kit, as the connections are normally quite tight enough by themselves.

Have you replaced your hose?

Cheers,

Bill

Hi Bill,
Yes, I changed all the hoses about 6 weeks ago and at the time, it made no difference in the high leak rate.
Last night, after washing the gasket and the entire humidifier really well, WITHOUT taping the seams, my leak rate was very high again.
I didn't tape the seams last night because I wanted to see if washing and securing the gasket would make a difference, but it doesn't appeared to have. So I will tape all the seams tonight and see how that goes.
I checked all the edges of all the plastic and nothing felt chipped. When I push the humidifier lid closed, there is a loud "click", so I'm assuming its tight there. I haven't been taping that little area where it clicks, but I've been taping everywhere else.
It seems to me that if there is a substantial leak, I would hear it, right? I can't feel any air escaping anywhere around the humidifier.
I'm starting to question the machine itself. I'm not sure that the numbers are reliable. Its very frustrating.
Maybe I should speed up the process of getting an S9, but they're not cheap.
Thanks for your help Bill.
