Phillips Remstar Auto

Phillips Remstar Auto
I have been using the latest model Phillips Remstar Auto for a couple of months.
It's a piece of junk.
It's very quiet but produces high frequency noise that will drive any normal person to distraction. It peaks at the height of the breath in and the start of the breath out. Sounds like a steam train whistle in the distance and sometimes like a beeping alarm on the back of a truck.
I keep getting told because the decibel level is in line with published specs I have no recourse.
Avoid at all costs.

Re: Phillips Remstar Auto
This is not normal and should not be happening. Return it to wherever you got it and they should set you up with something that works as it should.
Not sure exactly which one you're using, but none should do that. I use the System One Auto nearly pushed to the max (14-19 cm) and have never had this problem.

Re: Phillips Remstar Auto
This certainly sounds like that particular machine has a problem. I have not had that experience with my System One auto either.
I am very happy with my System One Auto! It is very quiet and there are really no noises, with my machine, that are loud enough to bother me at all. I am really not aware of any noise except the quick beep when it comes on automatically and when I turn it off. I'm awake with that and, if I get up in the night and turn it off for a few minutes , my husband does not hear it. He doesn't hear it come back on either.
You machine has a problem but, I would say it is not a problem with the System One in general.

Re: Phillips Remstar Auto
I had that machine too, and I actually really liked it, except for the pressure pulses and the tone.
My sleep doctor said I had hyper sensitive hearing, and had the machine switched for me to another brand.
My husband could not hear it, it was a very, very high pitched tone like the tuning fork sound in an Accutone watch.
It drove me insane too..
If that is what you are hearing, try to get a different machine, you'll never get any rest listening to that tone, its extremely aggravating
and put me on edge while I was trying to sleep.

Re: Phillips Remstar Auto
Teenagers these days sneak their cell phones into school and they have a high pitched ring tone that adults CANNOT HEAR! I didn't believe it myself until my teenage daughter showed me by playing the sound WAV file on the internet--both of my kids could hear it loud and clear, neither my husband nor I could. They can also hear dog whistles but we can't (hmmm, I wonder if that says something about my children? )--the dog doesn't necessarily react to those tones, however.
My daughter is driven to distraction by this ring tone in class--classmates use it all the time, and the teachers are oblivious.
My guess is that the PR S1, perhaps only certain machines or models(?), make a similar sound and some people can hear it while the majority of us cannot.
I would take the machine back to the DME and insist on swapping it out for another identical one, first of all, in case it only happens occasionally on SOME machines. If it happens to you on more than one machine, then you have to put the screws to the DME to replace it with another brand. Consider it a manufacturer's defect and see if you can get Phillips Respironics to work with you on this if your DME is being a poop.

Re: Phillips Remstar Auto
I hadn't considered that it could be a pitch out of my range of hearing. However, I'm 32 and I can still hear those high-pitched ring tones.
I used to work in home theatre. The human range of hearing is around 20Hz to 20,000 Hz at it's peak. For most people this is around 18-22 years of age. It's all downhill from there. The old joke goes that by the time you can afford the good stereo you can't hear it anymore...
I'll have the kids listen to it when I get home from work to see if they're hearing anything I'm not. I'm also inclined to think that if it were just a pitch out of my range that it would be CONSTANT, not coming and going on inhale.
I still think this is a defective machine, and not normal. Hard to say for sure...
Incidently, the kids use the "cricket" ring tones to not be heard by adults, but the joke is on them. Some business owners who have problems with teenagers hanging around have begun installing devices that play these high frequencies constantly, which is really irritating (even to teens) and consequently drives them away!

Re: Phillips Remstar Auto
That is facinating about the high pitched cell phone ring tones, and the ones to GET rid of naughty munchkins too!
The tone on my machine was constant, the second it was turned on I could hear it.. They plugged it in at the docs office and
there IT was.. they could only hear it if they put their ears next to the machine, if then.
BUT GEEZ LOUISE, its so annoying! I dont know who desgined it, or listened to it after they finished with it, and I dont know if all
the machines do this, but I have been reading about noisey system ones (mine was A flex) for awhile..
I cant have an accutron watch in the same room with me either.. INSANITY.. if its on the dresser about ten feet away..
however, if I stick in a thick sock, inside a drawer, then I can handle that..
There was NO way to cover the noise up on that machine!

Re: Phillips Remstar Auto
I'll have to check with my kids and see if they can hear that sound. It will be interesting if they can.
I always thought I had pretty good hearing, but now, not so much. I'm just 50 for crying out loud, but I have to turn the TV up to hear the dialog, and then the commercials come on and blast me.
My husband has pretty bad hearing. When he went for an audiology exam, he asked when it was going to be time for a hearing aid. The audiologist said "your wife will tell you."

"Your wife will tell you!"
I insisted that my husband get his hearing checked. I went with him since I am the one who knows he has a hearing problem!
The Audiologist said that it wouldn't make any difference for him to have hearing aids - the improvement would not be enough!!! I couldn't believe it! I have to repeat things sometimes 3 times when I'm in the same room as he is !!! If I'm not in the same room there is no point in even shouting!
Get this - the Audiologoist was a woman!!!

Re: Phillips Remstar Auto
I had my daughter turn on the machine and listen to it and she didn't notice any sound but the blower. She's 17 and VERY sensitive to sounds--if she didn't hear it, it isn't happening with my machine.
I have a feeling that this problem is not universal to all PR S1's but it may be limited to a few. I think if you are having this problem and you can't handle it you should contact the DME provider or Remstar and try to get the machine switched out. Maybe there are certain machines that have a manufacturing defect as opposed to a design defect affecting all the machines in the line.
I can hear a sound with my mask on--it's kind of a "servo" sound and it's clearly coming from the little hose on my Swift LT when the air is blowing through it. I think the sound probably originates from the machine, but the hollow plastic little hose seems to magnify it. It is even louder when that tube is against my pillow. One strange thing is that it's always louder at night when I am trying to fall asleep, I can rarely--if ever--hear it in the morning, even when I am lying quietly and trying to squeeze in a few minutes of that great feeling I have when awakening on CPAP.

Re: Phillips Remstar Auto
I had both kids listen to it... My girlfriend's 17 year old and 15 year old (we all live together) couldn't hear it. The 17 year old has probably already destroyed his hearing, but the 15 year old said she couldn't hear it either. I'm really thinking it's a defective machine...
EITHER WAY, if you're not happy with it, don't accept it. You have to have something you can use, or the whole episode is for nothing. Personally, I like the System One, and I don't think it's junk. If I'd had the same issues you have had, I'm sure my opinion would be different.
