Using CPAP with 12 volt battery. Resmed power Backup.

Post by chrisp » Fri Nov 12, 2004 7:30 pm

Has anyone used their cpap using 12 volts? Has anyone used an inverter with a Resmed unit ? Thinking of a backup plan for my Resmed .

Inverters work fine to power Resmed machines. They are not as efficient as a direct cable so don't expect as much battery life. Wonder why Resmed clings to 24 volt systems? Wonder if the S8 machines will be 12 volt?

Hi,
I use a rechargeable "jumpstarter" type device when I go camping. It's a Xantrex Powerpack 400 (around $90 at GI Joe's or Sears). It weighs around 20 lbs and will run my Remstar on 12v DC for 3 nights (without the humidifier... don't even try with it!). It also has an inverter built in, so can run 120v AC as well. That would be a little less efficient on AC, so I don't know how many nights would be expected.

It is a great alternative to a 60lb lead acid marine battery, which is the usual 12v suggestion. I've got one of them, also.

I did have a problem in the Xantrex's little rubber feet burned rings in my new hardwood floors. The rings didn't show up for a few days, so I couldn't figure out what they came from. I don't know if it was the chemistry of the rubber feet or some residual battery acid from the factory. Unhappy about that.

Topping....... My question is... Do I require a Pure Sine Wave inverter or may I use a modified sine wave inverter . I have a Resmed Spirit Auto. It ONLY runs on AC power. There is a huge difference in the cost. $ 130 v $40.
I dont want to fry my CPAP . I did notice that cpap.com sells a inverter for about $40. I'm not sure if a technical person approved it since I've been told that items with CPUs and motors need pure power. Hate to make toast out of my CPAP. Most inverter stores say I need Pure Sine Wave for medical equipment..
Any techno types out there ? What do you think?

Thanks ,
Chris

12 v power cord

I just made a new topic on the forum when I saw your topic.
Can you help me out.

The Remstar pro consumes maximum 36W per hour at 12VDC
with a pressure of maximum 16 cm. This is without other attachments.

Does any body have experience how long the Remstar pro can run
on a start aid of 400A (battery approx. 16AH) and 600A and
on battery of 40AH or let say 80AH.

Please specify the time that it can run safely without damaging the
Remstar pro or the battery.

In your reply specify following:

Equipment used
Total Watt at 12V DC
Pressure of CPAP
Capacity of battery or start aid.

Any other info might be very usefull for the users in the Netherlands
(which are your allies in the war against terror as you might know)

If you have a cheap solution for the 12V power cord also let me know.
If you have a spare one please contact me to mail it to me.
I will of course pay for it.

Thank in advance for your contribution and only react with facts
and no quick conclusions.

P.S.

I am also working on a new item :

I have an idee to make a black box to switch back and forward from the
Main supply of 110V/220V AC to 12V DC in case the main supply drops during the sleep. I am working on a prototype of this black box.

Can you help me with a design and make a possible
electronic schematic diagram ?
