my first mask

Post by akousw » Wed Mar 10, 2010 1:37 am

I am about to buy my first mask.

I am looking at the Ultra Mirage. Every time I do the sizing app, it shows me as a small standard. My wife tells me that I have a large face, and doesn't believe it. I have gone throught the app about 4 times now. Is there another way to size myself?

If you are going to buy the mask from CPAP.com you probably should consider the "return insurnace". Essentially this will allow you to return the mask if it does not fit.

If you purchase the mask from a DME then they should honor the 30 day return allowed by the manufacturers.

You might also want to call CPAP.com to see what they suggest.

By the way, welcome to the forum! Hopefully you will find lots of questions to answers here ... No, wait. That's supposed to be "lots of answers to questions here" !!

At any rate, good luck with your new mask!

Tell your wife the measurements are of relative distances between your features, not the general width or length of your whole face. That being said, the sizing guide is only approximate, so I agree that you should try the return insce. on Cpap.com.

I think I have decided on a better approach: I just called the sleep lab to ask them what the mask was that they used for my titration study. I can't believe that I thought of that. It was a pretty comfortable mask, even for having a hose stiking about a foot in front of my face and feeling only a little less like an astronaut than the first study! So, instead of measuring myself over and over again for hours, I just had to call myself the next morning, and, Fisher and Peykel Forma full face Medium. So, I've ordered the 'medium and large' size. The only question now is, is that size compatible with the quatro standard medium or standard small size?

The Resmed site has some mask fitting templates:

Be sure to print them in the correct scale, then you can cut out and hold against your face. Not perfect, but just another tool.

I got it and slept with it last night. The Forma full face medium was correct, as the sleep lab said, even though the instructions that came with it were a sheet of little bullet points and a full color page of pictures of a guy and some smiley faces so I'm not sure if I really put it on correctly. Actually, I think I figured out about halfway into the night, with the machine humming at my every exhalation, that the bottom is supposed to go under my chin, not in front of it. So, I spent half the really short night (church night + cleaning headgear for the first time) trying to fit my new mask and mezmerized by the c-flex feature on my machine matching my evey exhalation. I doubt it has ever taken me so long to go to sleep. I literally could not think on anything else! But, once I was asleep, I apparently slept soundly enough that I did not hear my alarm clock go off this morning, and did not need to take the 'sabbath afternoon nap' that some of the church old folks (I am about 26) joke about maintaining as a quasi-standard practice, and I have always, since joining this denomination around 2 1/2 years ago, have consistently weekly done, usually sleeping from lunchtime until at least 6.
