Nosebreathe device

Post by TClay » Thu Oct 13, 2005 1:33 pm

In an effort to stop having to tape my mouth shut I have researched the Nosebreathe device. I have noticed many people talking about it and wanted to know the following:
1. Will the standard device work? I do not want to spend $200 if I don't have to.
2. Does the device work?

TClay,

As everything else on this site, it's an individual thing. I think you will get both answers from those who have ordered the device. Yet, it does what it is claimed to do, which is stop you from mouth breathing. Will you like it and use it? That is totally your call.

I found it created an over-production of saliva. Dr. Sue suggested I keep at it and I would get used to it. After a couple of weeks, I found the over-production issue just as disruptive to my sleep as a bad mask, so I stopped using it and went back Tegaderm patches until I got my Aura and don't mouth breathe anymore. People like Kermit, who we haven't heard from in awhile, loved it and used it last we heard anything. But I'm sure you'll get other responses from other users. I personally did not like anything in my mouth when trying to sleep. Dr. Sue offered a refund to me, but I didn't bother. I kept it anyway.

So in reply to your question, yes, you can order the standard one, which is what I think everyone usually does here. Will you like it and use it? That will be totally up to you and how you feel about it. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

I agree with Lori.

I too have an NB sitting on a shelf now unused. For me it was hurting my tongue so I trimmed it to make it easier to get my tongue into the ramp but I found that I was still mouth breathing. After a week I put it aside.

When I 1st got it I was willing to try anything & Kermit's glowing report convinced me this was a winner.

I am learning to be a lot more cautious about people's glowing reports on things. These days if the person is not a regular poster, but is someone who 'pops up' and raves about some appliance etc: - I go into highly sceptic mode (very highly sceptic mode).

I have found there are certain people (usually the regulars) who you can trust. But even with us regulars we do have pet theories & our favorite machines & we can be guilty of promoting our favoritism over impartiality but on balance the regulars can be trusted.

Cheers

DSM,

I think what it all boils down to, in a nutshell, is that everything works differently on everyone with anything that has to do with our condition. Masks, devices, methods of reducing/eliminating mouth breathing and even machines; people just have their preferences. We all will not and cannot agree on anything one hundred percent. So it is wise to listen, weigh what the person is saying and then make an informed decision based on your judgment of all the information given whether you want to give something a try or not. You may luck out or you may waste some more money. But that's the way it is in this realm, and probably most others when you think about it.

Like the old Latin phrase goes, "Caveat emptor." Let the buyer beware.

Guess I'm odd person out, because I've had great success with the NB device, but only AFTER I modified it via Dremel tool (with Dr. Sue's help). It has made a big difference in my ability to use different masks, and there's always the "possibility" that it will, in fact, act as a training device and no longer be necessary .
