Taking longer to fall asleep
Taking longer to fall asleep
Hey All..
Before starting on my BiPap 10 days ago I used to fall asleep with in minutes of my head hitting the pillow (while driving or doing other activities as well). Since starting Bipap it takes me a long time to drift off, maybe 15 to 20 minutes or longer now..
Silly question.. Is this because I am more rested or because of being on the BiPap? I am feeling more comfortable with the mask these days and hoped I could fall asleep faster.
Thanks All
Matthew

Hi,
When I first started my cpap therapy, it also took me longer to fall asleep. It is in large part due to that you have a mask on now and are trying to fall asleep with this 'thing' on your face and air blowing into you. It gets better with time and now I fall asleep faster than I used to when I didn't have cpap. I love it!

Matthew,
I think both answers are correct. First, hopefully you have more energy and aren't as lethargic by bedtime anymore, so you don't just pass out like pre-cpap days. Then with all the getting used to the new way of falling asleep and sleeping itself, you can need a little adjusting.
I finally am able to fall asleep quickly again. It used to be 3 seconds from head hitting the pillow to snoring heavily, according to my husband. Then after getting relief from therapy, it took a little while, maybe 5-15 minutes. Now it's back usually to about 5 minutes and I'm out. But I do stay up later due to more energy at night, too.
This is an ever-changing ride we're on. Best to just try to sit back and let it happen. It will anyway, whether we like it or not.
Have a great weekend. Give that cute little one a big hug (what a face!).

Thanks for your feedback Sleepless... I am only getting around 6 hours on the mask at night. I tend to take it off once or twice at night because I am still getting used to it. Sleep is good when it is on and I THINK today I started to feel more energetic.. at least mentally..
I did not get the instant relief I was hopping for.. But with the support of this form and the great people here I am hanging in and going the distance.
Thanks to all of you!

Don't feel bad. I didn't get that instant relief, either. My first realization was when someone asked me if I felt the fatigue still and the answer was a surprising and resounding, "NO!!!" That was a great feeling to realize that.
Then about a little over a week into my therapy, I woke up one morning and I hadn't felt like I felt that morning in years. I couldn't recall the last time I felt like that. I was wide awake, brain already computing well and just alive. However, I was so excited, I ran around the house looking to tell everyone so I wore myself out in a few hours from the adrenaline rush I induced. But it was the only time I had such a great obvious "slap in the face" that it was working. After that, subtly it just kept getting better and better. I went longer each day holding onto that energy until all of a sudden, I was no longer tiring out. I had the energy to do whatever I wanted and then some. Made me start exercising, eating right, and went on a total health kick. Still on it today, four months later.
Like TXKajun always signs his posts, "This therapy WORKS!!!" He's right, it does. Hang in there and try to keep that mask on at night. You'll get results that much faster if you do. GOOD LUCK!!! You have that adorable baby who needs daddy to be rarin' to go.

My experience with CPAP is the same as Fair Spirit's, and I agree with her explanation.
