Humidifier Advice for Travel

Post by CarlyPAP » Mon Dec 21, 2009 1:14 am

I live in sunny Northern California and I use my heated humidifier at setting 2. I am traveling to Illinois for New Year's eve and I have no idea if I should change my humidifier setting while I am there? Is it more humid? Less humid? Any seasoned CPAP user travelers care to weigh in? I would appreciate any help.

The winter time in IL is pretty dry due to heating of the house/hotel/etc. I tend to use a higher humidity setting my self in colder weather. Watch out for condensation if the room gets cold at night.

How long are you going to be there? I have the same CPAP machine you do, and I have mine at a 3(not sure how their humidity is compared to mine here). My suggestion is to see how it feels your first night there. If your sinuses are dry in am, then bump it a couple. If I go just a couple days I don't even take my humidifier. I had to raise my pressure by one while in Alaska and it took a night or two of trial and error. This probably isn't the answer your looking for but its what works for me...Good luck and have a fun trip!

San Jose tends to be fairly dry in the summer, Carly, so your humidification setting should work on your trip. But you're headed to a much colder climate, so unless the bedroom where you'll be staying is warm, you'll need a good hose cover to prevent rainout. Have fun.

CarlyPap it all depends on how much moisture is in the room. I have had mine on 3 for a year, I put a humidifier in my bedroom and now I have to turn my humidifier down to 2 or 1. If you want to be sure, pick up a small portable hygrometer that also reads temperature and use it at home. Remember what the temperature is at night and the humidity and the setting on your humidifier. If the temperature is about the same as where you sleep now then look at the humidity if it is lower you may need to turn your humidifier up and turn it down it if is higher. It shouldn't be a major thing to figure out if you have a hygrometer with a temperature guage.

Why would you be coming to Chicago for new years? Everyone here wants to go someplace else.

Carly, be ready for extreme cold and snow in Chicago. It has been under 30 degrees there for three weeks.

It has not, it has been 89 and sunny! Just ask my neighbors I have been out sunbathing. Oh wait that's not sunburn it's frostbite I got.

Oh well, yes it has been cold but it is warming up so now we are getting freezing rain until tomorrow afternoon. The roads are covered in ice and getting worst.

A wedding on new years eve. Someone I know is getting married on new years eve, and I can't recall who it is.
This is going to drive me nuts.

Well, humidification seems to be a tricky thing.

At home, I've been using either passive or 1. I keep my bedroom quite cool in the winter time, so any higher makes the rainout intolerable (though turning off the fan that I started running during the summer has helped, though the lack of fan noise is a new problem....before I liked my bedroom quiet, now well....need some noise to mask the other noises).

When I was in Chicago around Thanksgiving....I got by with just passive humidification.

Last week I was in Calgary, it was -17F when I arrived.....I started with 1 and woke up feeling bad, so I bumped it to 2. Came home and first had humidification on...but woke up during the night congested and switched back to passive.

Of course, its usually pretty humid here in Kansas...while its really dry in Calgary...especially when its that cold....

Haven't decided if I'll get a humidifier for the rest of my home this year or not.....last year I managed without. Though there where times where I got close to running out of water in my integrated humidifier....didn't get the HC150 until spring, so haven't really worked it yet.

Though I've had people tell me they don't use humidification, that live in places that get really cold...I can't imagine that....of course, I've always had problems with nose bleeds when it gets dry. Though I did use to live in Alberta.....which is definitely somewhere that gets cold and dry in the winter. I don't miss when it gets so cold that it doesn't matter whether you're talking in C or F....and then there was the walking and the wind....

And, in the winter time...I don't miss the house I had up there. There were days/weeks where the furnace would run 24/7 and lose ground in warming the house.

Aww, the memories....
