Extra mucous since starting XPAP?

Post by Jaylee » Mon Dec 14, 2009 8:48 pm

It seems that ever since starting BiPap I have had a lot of mucous that comes up when I cough. Nothing really severe, and I did have a sinus infection that could have added to it. But I find that pretty much since day one I have had a lot of extra mucous. Not that it is stopping me from using my beloved BiPap machine, but I was wondering if this has been true for anyone else, and if there is anything I can do to help relieve it?

I can not take decongestants because of my high BP.

Is it from lungs (deep coughing) or post-nasal drip? If the latter, it might be leftovers from the sinus infection (had one that last nearly 4 months ) and saline spray, nasal steroid spray, Mucinex (plus lots of extra water), hot steaming liquids sipped slowly (steam goes up nose), extra water (warm if it's cold where you are) all help. I also have a Grossan nasal irrigator that helps when I'm at my wit's end with congestion .

If it's the former (productive cough from lungs), might ck with your doc. Is the mucus clear or slightly cloudy (that's normal)? If not, get it cked out...soon. With the ocughing and rib pain you reported on another thread and dis-colored phlegm, you'd have the symptoms (plus feeling really really bad) when a doc decided I had pneumonia and X-ray confirmed it. Might be nothing but it's worth getting cked if dis-colored.

I had a lot of extra mucous when I started using my CPAP many, many moons ago. But it subsided. The added pressure appeared to trigger mucous production. As I adjusted to CPAP it settled down. As the pressure need changed (over the next ten years) it resurfaced, but went away faster. I don't have any problem with it now.

I also assume that the increased pressure and better breathing during the night might have increased the depth of my breathing. So, my lungs would better clear themselves. Not really sure what it was. But it decreased over time.

Cough, cough a bit in the early morning. It was clear - no sign of infection. So, I didn't sweat it.

Always best to stay away from them with CPAP, since a decongestant rebound can make CPAP mask use impossible.

Thanks. I am thinking it is probably more from the sinus infection then. I don't usually cough anything up, and on the rare occasions I have it was clear.

I tend to have a perma-cold this time of year anyway from working with little kids. I am going to go back to neti potting, I haven't done it for a while now.
