Because it's pushing against you as you exhale.

My sleep doc saw me react negatively the day after my study, and he prescribed a BiPAP machine, which senses when I breathe out and lowers the air pressure slightly. I suspect that if he hadn't done that, I would have chucked the whole thing -- and its health benefits -- from the get-go.

Hey, Guest, especially if your [sic] the Guest I greeted in an earlier post, you oughta register and get a "real" username, so we can relate to you a little better.

Hello Guest,

Whenever possible, it would be very helpful if you would sign in under one registered username consistently. This helps us to search your previous posts if needed and follow your situation better. Be sure to fill out the equipment profile for that username, which can be found in the upper left corner of the screen via User Control Panel. This will help us to see at a glance what machine and mask you're using so we can try to offer specific help.

In earlier posts under your two registered usernames (Marlins and teri), you mentioned that you have a Remstar C-Flex Auto machine. What is the current C-Flex exhalation setting? Have you tried changing that?

I don't use a Respironics machine myself, so I'll leave it to the others to offer you some advice regarding your problem. I'm sure it's something that can be worked out.

That's not very much information to go on. Care to tell us more?

If you're on a blood pressure medication like Lisinopril, that can cause coughing. Lack of sufficient pressure or leaking air out of your mouth (if you wear a nasal mask) could cause the suffocating feeling (you're losing your therapy air and are almost like not getting any therapy).

GERD can cause coughing also. The feeling of suffocation is probably just psychological, loosen the mask, take a couple of breathes to satisfy your inner toddler and put it back on.

What's your pressure set at?? if it's too low that can sometimes cause a feeling of suffocation.

Yeah, I had to stop the ramp up feature. I just wasn't getting enough air initially. I felt like the air was being sucked out of me.
