Starting Over...which facemask?

Post by chalkjockey » Fri Dec 04, 2009 5:46 am

I recently lost my luggage with my M-Series safely packed away inside (I'm a frequent traveler...law of averages finally caught up to me). So, I'm in the market for a new machine and I'd like to settle on the ResMed S8 Elite II. My M-Series was as loud as a jet engine and I've heard the S8s are whisper quiet. However, I'm partial to the Respironics Comfort Curve, or their Profile Lite facemasks. Does anyone know if you can use a Respironics facemask on a ResMed machine?

long as you're not talking an ASV machine... yes you can use any mask with any machine.

With a Resmed, you just have to know what the mask setting needs to be on a non-Resmed mask.

You can use just about any mask with just about any machine because the hoses are standard sizes. The only small difference might be in the way the machines calibrate for apneas and hypopneas, one type or the other registering slightly more or less of each for data purposes, plus I think you can 'tell' the machine (not sure which) what mask you have and it adjusts something or other to accommodate (what I'm not sure of!).

In the US, it is not counted as part of your carryon if it's in its own case (add a tag that says "medical equipment"), don't put anything but xPAP-related stuff or prescribed meds in the case, and request to pre-board with it so you can stow it overhead or underseat if so desire. Take out place in bin, some put it in a big baggy for cleanliness while in bin, ask TSA to don clean gloves to handle it for explosives swab. That way, you won't be without. Some carry their scripts to get immediate (or overnight) replacement if damaged.

Both my ResMeds have been extremely quiet, a big factor for me. You can use any mask with the ResMeds (unless VPAP). I wore the Respironics OptiLife for yrs. There is a way to identify the mask vent rate on the machine so it calculates overnight leak...get the machine and mask and come ask.

PS Buying from our host, who will price match if ya find it cheaper online; if a ResMed machine, it comes with a ResMed travel case and medical ID tag: https://www.cpap.com

Muse,

Please, please, please share with me the secret of how to set the vent rate for a mask! I don't think my Autoset II likes my FullLife mask very much at all, and I've tried "MIR FULL" and "STANDARD" mask settings.

Are there hidden settings to program your own mask settings?

My personal best choice for masks has evolved to the ResMed Mirage Activa. For me it is by far the best mask I have used in some 21 years of treatment.

This is on my wish list for xPAP machine in the future ! I can't conjure up a method that will work ideally, but my Hybrid vents more than any ResMed mask, so I user MIR FULL and expect to see a reported leak number that will be close to the difference in mask vent rates. So far, I mostly have lower than expected reported leak which I'll take as meaning I have minimal if any leak. I go by these ResMed numbers and the vent rate stated in the lit that came with my Hybrid.http://www.resmed.com/us/assets/documen ... sa_eng.pdf
