Smelly Hose

Post by qjosea » Fri Nov 27, 2009 8:12 am

How to get the foul smell out of a hose? I have washed it with antibactirila soap let it dry, then this foul smell started to eminate from it. I don't know how to get it out, it's really bad. Can anyone help?

Thanks,

This is how I cleaned my hose after I suddenly experienced a very
unpleasant taste/smell in my mouth. (Why did I know it was the hose -
because I have got no dental problems, floss regularly and mouth rinse)
So the next thing to look at was my cpap equipment. I washed the hose
with warm baby shampoo water, rinse and then sterilised with MILTON
sterilising fluid.(read instructions carefully) To dry the hose, I hang it up
vertically out of direct sunlight (NB).
Lucky me, the taste/smell in my mouth is gone. I know
some members never ever wash the hose, but after this nasty experience
I will certainly wash and sterilise the hose every 2 weeks or at least once
per month.

Thanks,
Interesting that his happened after you cleaned it. I have always maintained that cleaning a well-kept hose is more likely to cause problems that leaving it alone.

How about getting a new hose and throwing this one away? Then take care of your hose by storing it in a closed drawer while not in use and never try to clean the (nearly pristine) inside of the hose.

qjosea, occassionally I've had my unit start to smell. (Usually, it's from the room deoderant that hotels use). When that happens, I use a similar approach as above, but with normal household chemicals.

I also use warm baby shampoo water. Why baby shampoo? It is a gentler detergent. And the scent is normally acceptable. You can also use an unscented, mild shampoo. Why warm water? Too much heat is not good for the plastics (or your hands). I wash the hose, mask and humidifier tank in this.

Then I typically use a warm water and household vinegar solution. Not much vinegar. Just a touch. I tend to skip the mask in this bath, since the vinegar can degrade the silocone.

Then I finish with a warm water rinse. Of course I rinse all parts.

And as Maritjie notes, I hang up the hose (over a towel rack) out of sunlight.

That approach seems to work really well.

There is always lots of discussion on this forum about cleaning equipment. I'm another in the camp which believes washing a hose will likely contribute to its degradation. I don't have any expertise about it. Just seems to me that tiny spots of soap residue are very likely to remain inside, with all those coil indents; and that this would easily become a base for accumulating other unwanted "stuff." It's just water vapor inside the hose. What's to clean? I've never cleaned my PB 420E hose in the past year of constant use, and it's perfectly "pristine," to use Rooster's word. I just hang it on an over-the-door hook on my bathroom door all day. Just like new, with no odor whatever.
