Choosing type of machine

Post by jdrabek@verizon.net » Sun Jan 09, 2005 12:13 pm

I am a newbie at this. I have not even received my cpap device yet. Is there any particular type of device that is better than others that I should ask for if given the choice? Also, what mask should I ask for? I am a little scared by all of this.

See if you can try on as many masks as possible. Some providers are better than others at fitting the masks. Compare online beforehand so you have some idea of what is available, on the understanding all local providers do not carry all of the brands.

When you had your test what kind of mask did you wear? Did you like it? Did it drive you crazy? Some people swear by nasal pillows, I cannot stand them.

Unless you know you must have a full face mask (nose and mouth covered) most people start with nose masks. I like the ultra mirage, shallow. This is because I have a rather flat face and small area between my eyes. Some companies will let you try a mask for 30 days. (Breathing Disorders in my area).

A heated humidifier is a must, whether it is a one piece machine or two machines hooked together. Often your doctor will add a nasal steroid and/or a antihistimine to ensure your nose stays clear.

A lot of which machine is like choosing a car. Do you travel a lot? by plane? carr? go overseas? hike?
How sensitive are you to noise at night-though most of the new machines are very quiet.

Good luck to finding the right machine.
