First Good(ish) Numbers

Post by TWW » Tue Nov 17, 2009 11:02 am

Last night, after waking up "comfortably" after a couple of masked hours, I broke my bad pattern: This time, after chatting with RG and a couple others, I (1) reset my display stats and (2 -- drum roll) put the mask back on before returning to sleep.

Hey, for me, a user who has yet to see 4 continuous hours, this was progress, okay?

Best of all, the numbers from the second half of last night:
  • Therapy Hours: 3.2
  • 90% Pressure: 12 / 10
  • System Leak: 32.8 (?)
  • AHI: 0.8
I'm not sure whence the leak number, since that would imply a decent breeze, and I perceived none save the bit that escapes through the elbow connector where the hose meets the mask.

Thank you, forum folks, for the info on resetting a Respironics display.

I am not fully familiar with your Respironics M-Series BIPAP machine. However, I have an M-Series APAP and your reported System Leak # on my machine, for an F&P Forma mask at a pressure of 10 - 12, would be close to its intentional leak rate. Your System Leak, if reported by my Respironics M-Series APAP, would actually be Very Good (close to zero measurable "unintentional" leak).

Please note that the Respironics LCD reports a simple average for System Leak. For example, a leak of 32 LPM for 1 minute followed by a leak of 60 LPM for 7 hours and 59 minutes (479 minutes) would result in a Simple Avg Leak value of (32 +60) / 2 or 46 LPM (not too bad). The weighted Avg Leak calculation would be ((32 * 1) + (60 * 479))/(1 + 479) or 59.9 LPM (a Leak Rate that may compromise your XPAP-enabled therapy). The moral of this story is to look at the weighted avg System Leak rate not the simple avg System Leak rate. EncorePro and EncoreViewer do a weighted avg System Leak. The Respironics LCD shows a Simple avg System Leak. This is just one of the reasons that I highly recommend XPAP machines that provide full data recording/reporting capabilities (AHI, System Leak, ...) and the accompanying Reporting Software (and card reader).
