Sleep Study = Scary AHI & SpO2%

Post by falvesjr » Sat Nov 14, 2009 9:59 am

I just got a copy of my sleep study two days ago when I went to see the sleep doc. My numbers were pretty scary! The AHI was 114.1 and the mean SpO2% was 85.1, with a minimum of 69.0!!! Needless to say, I am very glad I had my sleep study and am now on xPAP.

How often do you guys see numbers like these?

Wow!

What's also amazing is how quickly you get desaturated. My longest event was 32.7 seconds, so that's the most it took for me to get to 69%...

I had 199 obstructive and 174 hyponeas in a 7 hour period with a mean duration of 20 secs. My O2 sats were between 90-100 for 93% of my sleep time and between 80-90 only 0.4% of sleep time. AHI of 57, my longest apnea was 35 sec and longest hypoanea was 53. I took an ambien to sleep stupid me but I had a stressful day so my numbers were much worse during my sleep study.

What freaked me out was seeing the EEG tracings and how just often my brain was going into panic mode to prevent me from dieing. Oh, and no REM at all.

Interesting. My longest event was 32.5s and my lowest was 85%, I wonder why there is such a big difference between two people.

Good question, Llama. Maybe body size has something to do with it. Bigger body needs more oxygen and uses it up faster? Just a guess...

It's how much your airway closes and for how long, not body size that makes the difference in the stats for different people.

Overall cardiac & pulmonary health.
falvesjr - to reach 69% you likely didn't start at 95% either. Now we know why you wanted to buy a PR1.

Given that my median SpO2% was 85.1 during the study, I'm sure that while sleeping my O2 was probably lower than 95% before it dipped to 69%. But awake, my O2 levels are actually very good, 98% or higher. I recently got a CMS-P oximeter (the USB one that connects directly to a PC) and will do an overnight run to see what numbers I'm getting now that I'm on xPAP. Should be interesting!
