I keep taking off my mask in my sleep

Post by jlemaire » Fri Nov 13, 2009 6:18 am

Im frustrated and honestly sometimes scared. For a year now whenever I sleep with my mask I wake up with it off. Sometimes in my hand and sometimes right next to me. I know the risk of not sleep with one, as my friend had passed a couple years ago. Any suggestions? or any mask you know of that can help.

How does the mask feel on your face? Is it painful anywhere? Are you getting any sore spots? If the mask is not adjusted properly the discomfort may be causing you to remove it.
Can you breathe OK with the mask on? Do you feel as if you are struggling for air? A wrong pressure setting may cause you to remove the mask.
If everything else is OK you may want to tape the mask in place. Just one strip of tape or a bandaid across a strap. The discomfort of the tape pulling when you remove the mask may help remind you to leave it on. You can also wear your mask during the day, while awake. Watch TV, read, or listen to the radio to keep your mind off the mask. This may help you more comfortable with the mask on during the night.

Hey Brenda,

I actually am comfortable with the mask. At first I went through the initial issues but then I put it on and I'm comfortable as far as falling asleep. No soreness from what I've experienced. But then again I'm always taking it off. Only a few times on my hand I can count me keeping it on. I'm looking up underchin straps that I have heard others talk about. I'll try the tape as well.

removing mask in sleep is common for new users, simply tape mask to face so pain will remind you to leave it there

And there's the "wear socks on your hands" trick. I wish I'd heard of that one when I started.
