Average leak

Post by not so sure » Thu Nov 05, 2009 10:44 am

I am using a comfortlite 2 mask. The book says the leak rate should be around 30. My daily average leak rate varies between 39.3 to 42 with the ahi being between .8 and 2.5. Is this normal for this mask? Also when i am set at auto cpap what is the fl that shows on the chart above the osa?

The "FL" is for Flow Limitation. An apnea is a complete stoppage of "flow". A flow limitation is a significant drop in airflow. Think of a FL as an "apnea wannabe".

The Leak Rate in the book is the intentional "leakage" that flushes your exhaled breath from the mask so you don't breathe it in again. It's basically what flows continuously out of the vent holes. Anything above that rate (in your case 10-12 lpm) is unintended, undesirable leakage, usually from a poorly adjusted mask. Your machine can compensate for leakage at that level, but things would be quieter and you'll probably sleep better if you can fix the leaks.

Your AHI is pretty good, actually, but I'll bet it gets more consistent when you address those leaks.

The OSA patient died quietly in his sleep.

The weird thing is last week i had a very stressful day and very little sleep that night, the next i had a leak rate of 43 and a total of 2 osa for the whole night and it was the best sleep i have had in 25 years. I have been on this therapy for 6 months now i am starting to get greedy i want sleeps like that every night
