When does the feeling rested start?

Post by sleepless inTulsa » Mon Oct 19, 2009 2:36 pm

I have been using a cpap for over two months now, and while the episodes of waking up in the middle of the night and not being able to go back to sleep are much less frequent, I still don't wake up feeling rested.

I do wake frequently with an itching nose, discomfort from the mask, moisture accumulation in the mask, or the hose popping off the masak besause I rolled over the wrong way, etc, but I have no problem going right back to sleep.

I am hesitant to mention this lack of rested feeling to the doctor for fear that the insurance company will take the unit away if I report anything besides excellent success.

Does anybody out there really experience this " new level of energy" that I have heard so much about?

If so, can you share any advice?

Start reading through the postings in the following thread. They will give you an idea of the range in success stories. Some users had instant success while others took much longer to see positive results.

I've been on cpap for about a month and a half--almost 2 months now, I still wake up groggy sometimes--overall though i do feel progress. it may just take some time, hang in there.

Which machine are you using? What settings? Any data available that might give a hint to a possible contributing factor in less than great rested feelings?

It is easy for us to say "give it time" but all the time in the world won't help if you aren't getting optimal therapy.
Heck, even with optimal therapy many of us haven't seen that "rested feeling" that we hear about from some very lucky people. I have had a few glimpses of it but it doesn't happen often enough to suit me in nearly 5 months and I have the data and software to see what is going on.

So please take the time to register and fill out your user account profile equipment page so we know what you are using. Then someone can tell you how to maybe access your data (if your machine offers it) that might give us a clue as to possible culprits.

Talking to the doctor will not impact the insurance company's involvement in your machine use unless you haven't been able to meet compliance usage requirements.

After following Pugsy's suggestions kindly tell us (after thinking back) just how long do you think you've had OSA?

Hi,

Your doctor cannot help you if you are not totally honest. That is part of the expectation of the doctor and patient relationship. If you don't trust your doctor, then you need to find a new one.

Feeling rested IME, depends on so many factors some not even related to PAP therapy, as well as figuring out all the ins and outs of ideal pressure, mask fitting and comfort, leaks, body position during apneas, and of course how many OSA events that you have during the night. Do you have the software to be able to analyze your results? Getting the doctor to do it for you might take a longer time than you trying to figure things out yourself, but having an expert could also lead you down the right path sooner.

Basically, there are SO MANY variables to figuring out how to not have events that prevent you from feeling rested and unfortunately if you're not lucky enough to hit on the magic formula sooner, than it may take later for things to be figured out.

All you can do is to keep at it until things like the pressure and events and leaks are at the ideal level for you to feel rested. I can't say that I'm totally there yet but after 10 mths, I do feel far better than I used to.

I MUST stay off my back to reduce OSA & snoring. I use a small backpack of solid styrofoam to keep me on my side (tennis balls too small), & use DIY customized soft foam pillow to keep my head in a side sleeping position to eliminate most OSA.

You have a list of valid, non-breathing issues that keep you from restful sleep.
They can be helped:
  • an itching nose,
    discomfort from the mask,
    moisture accumulation in the mask,
or the hose popping off the masak besause I rolled over the wrong way, etc,
Hose routing make a big difference in mask comfort -- for me, it was letting the hose dangle from above my head.
Rested Gal's LINKS to Hose hangers and other methods of managing the main air hose:

Discomfort from the mask may be a result of its not fitting, or being pulled on too tight, or perhaps its need of some padding -- tons of tips and advice available for most mask types -- but as other said, we have to know which mask firts.

Moisture accumulation has a number of solutions:
  1. Lower humidifcation level
  2. A cover for your hose and (if you have it) the mask tube
  3. A heated hose.
I need both the cover and a heated hose when the weather is cold.

Your sleep quality can be made better.
Welcome to the forum, and good luck.

O.
