My name is Peggy & I went for a sleep study last week. Today they called & asked me to come back tonight for a cpap study tonight. They said there is something wrong, but didn't tell me what. Is this normal. Like everybody else I just wanna sleep. I am soooo tired.

welcome peggy,
it sounds like progress is being made, they will fit you with a mask using a CPAP machine to experiment in getting the correct air pressure for you, things should be easier for you the second time, remember to stay calm and relaxed, it may help to take deep slow breaths when getting off to sleep, if you arent comfortable on your back, ask if you can lie on your side

this is how things were done with me, but sometimes they put a CPAP on you later during the first night

Click on the "Our Wisdom" lightbulb icon at the top of the CPAPTalk screen and start reading. Try to read through the first two topics
1) Sleep Apnea Awareness
2) Visiting The Sleep Lab
before tonight's sleep study.

After your sleep study, continue reading the other topics in the "Our Wisdom" list, especially those having to do with selection of equipment, etc.

If you have specific questions from your reading, post here and you will get help.

Yes, Peggy, this is normal. Many people go for a second night sleep study. You must have shown signs of sleep apnea, so they will try to find the best way to help you. This will probably mean using a cpap machine, with you wearing a mask, to determine your needs to keep you breathing--no apneas. You don't sleep well, and you lose oxygen when you aren't breathing well, so you don't get proper sleep. These things can also cause other medical problems if not treated. Plus, you're really tired and don't have any energy.

Hope you sleep well tonight. I had lots of trouble relaxing when I had my study, so I recited prayers I've known since I was a child, and it really helped.

Good luck! Irene

The first night I think I slept about 2-3 hours. Tonight I hope to sleep more. I only sleep even with Ambien or Ambien CR about 4-5 hours & never feel rested. I hope this helps.

It could be that your apnea is fairly mild, and they had to let you sleep more than half the night to determine how severe it was. Then, they would request the second night to do the 'titration', where you are fitted with a mask. A technician monitors your sleep and adjusts the pressure to determine exactly what you need.

Or, perhaps they did determine early on in your first study that you had sleep apnea, and fitted you with a mask for the second half of the night (which is what happened with me, and as mentioned earlier in the thread, is called a 'split study'). But upon evaluating the results (as the wording of your post suggests), your doctor noticed that there was something more going on. Perhaps they want to try out a bi level CPAP machine on you, or something along those lines.

All the advice given here is good. Hopefully, you will have a sucessful and productive night!

Have a nice sleep tonight, while the respiratory tech figures out the best therapy pressures for you. After my study, I woke up feeling refreshed and hungry. Coffee and a muffin were supplied. They also had a private shower and shampoo available, to wash all the gunk out of my hair.

Things that I found helpful were bringing my own pillow, wearing socks and comfy pj's, and asking for an extra blanket. My respiratory tech was very caring and helpful, in explaining the procedure and helping me try on masks.

I found that this video on YouTube was very informatiave:

Let us know how it goes.
