Advice on Auto Bi-pap

Post by plumtuckered » Thu Oct 15, 2009 7:37 pm

After reviewing my Cpap data, my Dr decided to switch me to an Auto Bi-pap. I would be interested in advice anyone might have on which units to consider. Cost is a factor of course. My insurance pays 80% and I pay 20%. I will also be shopping for a new DME. My current DME qouted a price of $4400 for an Auto Bi-pap, regardless of the make or model

My scrip specifies an Ipap of 14-20 and an Epap of 9-16.

I am leaning toward a Resmed as I already have the USB cable and software, but I could always sell them on eBay.

or check Craigslist

I would not continue padding their pockets at those rates.

you really only have a couple of choices... especially if you want full data

Mseries Auto Bipap

or

S8 VPAP Auto 25

If you're going with the VPAP... make sure that you check out Slinky's posts... there was a mention of something not working quite right (I didn't pay much attention to it as it's not the machine that I have).

Thanks, I will check them out. I think the VPAP was the one my DME was going to sell for $4400.

Hi,

$4400 !?!?!? Is that to buy the entire company, or just one machine? The M-Series Auto BiPAP can be had new with humidifier for right around $1000 from on-line sources. Maybe the sales person at your DME has a payment on his Jaguar coming up.

The Resmed VPAP Auto is full data capable. It was just released in January of 2008. There is not a lot of difference from the Resmed VPAP Auto 25 which was just released in July 0f 2008. Why the two releases so close together I have no idea.

The two brands of machines have very different approaches to bilevel. With the ResMed bilevels, the distance between breathe-in pressure and breathe-out pressure remains the same as the pressures move around together, in tandem. With the Respironics, the distance between breathe-in pressure and breathe-out pressure changes as the two pressures roam separately. Seems to me a sleep doc might have a preference if he understood that difference.

I have used the ResMed VPAP Auto and the Respironics BiPAP Auto. My wife prefers the VPAP Auto because of how much quieter it is. I like the manly looks of the BiPAP Auto and I like the Respironics software, but I do prefer the ResMed's pressure delivery for comfort reasons.

If I already had cable and software, I would lean toward the VPAP 25 myself, but I would not be profoundly disappointed with either machine.

heheh..yep. Cynical me thinks that most "sleep" doctors don't know that at all about the two machines. I'm soooo cynical, I doubt if many DME's Respiratory Therapists know it either. Heck, I'd even bet that most reps of the manufacturing companies themselves don't know that difference about the way those two brands handle the PS.

But here's where they can learn about that, thanks to a great post Jeff wrote...
