Flucuation of Humidifer Water Usage

Post by DannyPh » Mon Oct 12, 2009 11:35 am

I have been using My HH on a setting of 1 and with water Usage being about half a Tank. This Morning I noticed that the Tank was almost empty. The HH setting was still set on 1. Could this Extra Water Usage be from Longer Hours on Machine ( 12 Hours ) last night and possibly From the cooler nights we have been having Here ? Just Curious. Thgank you

Yep, for sure the extra hours of usage and possibly also from the change in the weather if the weather change also equates into a change in the ambient humidity.

I've been experiencing the same thing--much more frequent need to add water. I attribute it to the weather rather than sleeping longer because I'm not.

Unless you have a humidifier, turning on your furnace makes the relative humidity drop significantly. Lower humidity makes your humidifier water usage increase.

Humidity here in Reno has dropped enough already that I actually had to turn up the heat setting on my machine. The next few days will be interesting, as they are predicting heavy rain. The mountains here have a significant effect on the weather, and wintertime is characterized by nice weather interspersed with storms that typically last 2-3 days. Most storms do not create much precipitation in Reno proper, but can dump feet of snow in the mountains. Instead, we get very high winds.

What pressure are you running? It is unusual for that machine, set at humidifier setting of one, to use even a half tank of water in eight hours if the pressure is below 14.

I suspect you are mouthbreathing . Mouthbreathing with nasal pillows can result in a high air flow. Higher air flow means more water usage. Mouthbreathing with nasal pillows can result in poor therapy and you could still be having apneas.

Your mouthbreathing may be worse some nights than others thus causing variation in the amount of water used. You say you have started having cooler nights and this may have caused more nasal congestion. More congestion can cause more mouthbreathing.

Leaks will also increase the amount of water used too.

Mine is on "2" , which is usually good for 2 nights of use, but lately It's been using about 30% more. I attibuted it to turning on the heat at night. I don't remember it like this last year, but it's already much colder than last fall.
