ResMed S8 II questions

Post by Lou Cypher » Thu Oct 01, 2009 8:22 am

Last night was my first night with my new machine....

This morning after I pushed the stop button I noticed a slight amount of air coming through the hose.

I got out the books and saw where it said the heated humidifier will keep the blower going to cool down the humidifier for up to an hour....

Being curious, I left it go and one hour and 45 minutes later it was still running... I tried turning the switch on and off again , same result. So I unplugged it and plugged it back in and everything stopped.

Is there a setting in there somewhere that I can turn this feature off or do I have to unplug and plug back in every day????

Also there is a little green light ( like a little dot) next to the heater switch, it says on/off but it is always lit.

Is it supposed to always stay lit??

Thanks in advance for help on some basic newbie S8 questions.

I just finished my trial with this unit's predecessor, the ResMed S8 AutoSet Vantage. I was told by the sleep clinic that the machine would continuously blow air very gently while in standby mode. I also read instructions on the humifier, and the indicator light always stays on: dim for power on, and bright for element heating. Hope that helps. How do you otherwise like the unit? I will be getting one after I get my preapproval from my insurer.

Thanks for the info.....

First off let me say my first unit ( which I had for 5 years) was just a straight pressure all the time unit. Then I got a C Flex and thought it was fantastic (6 years)...

So now realize that I had 11 years of constant pressure blowing into me at night, So last night was the first night with the S8 and I had trouble getting to sleep and staying asleep because I kept waiting for and wanting that full pressure feel down my throat and as I would begin to drift off to sleep I would feel the slight up ramp of pressure and it would wake me up because I wasn't used to that ....

Now on to the good part, when I woke up this morning, I was wide awake in just a minute or so. Usually I am laying around and gradually waking up. I do believe I was ready for another sleep study and pressure change and this machine did all that for me. I feel so wide awake and fully rested today .......

I think after a few days of getting used to the way this machine adjusts pressure I will be fine ...

it is much quieter than anything I have ever used. i believe Had I not had so many years with the old tank I would have NOT had any problems at all.

Using my old one was like driving down the road at 75 miles an hour and sticking your face out the window and trying to breathe.....

I ordered a card reader and can't wait until I can start seeing what this machine is actually doing for me...

Thanks! I'm definitely looking forward to being able to get my new unit. The week on the Vantage was good, I didn't realize how much of a difference it could make, and I didn't have much trouble getting used to it. I thought the noise wasn't too bad from it (though I gather it gets louder after I've fallen asleep after the ramp mode), but the new S8 II is supposed to be way quieter. Good news for my wife, since she couldn't sleep with the noise of the machine.

My S8 Autoset II is whisper quiet. You may hear your mask exhalation, but not the machine!! I do know that my machine does continue air flow for a little while after I shut it off in the mornings, in order to dry out any moisture still in the hose. This is a good thing to help avoid any unnecessary bacterial growth.
I've never timed it exactly, but have gone back and checked it later on and it does indeed stop. Light indicators are as explained earlier.

Re: ResMed S8 II questions - NEWBIE

I am a total newbie, and just received my first CPAP today, the S8 II Auto Adjust. (with 4i humidifier) I'll be on my first night with my own CPAP since the sleep study and home titration study (which was awful due to no humidifier).

I have to thank the people on this board....read the hell out of everything I could so I was able to spec this machine, and the Mirage LT mask. My RX listed everything I wanted, so there was no cheapening at the DME.

I had a chance to try on the comfort gel masks, but it didn't feel good at all at the DME fittings. Felt heavy and leaked a lot. My RP let me take home both the Mirage LT and a Nasal Pillow to try out.

I took a nap today first trying a nasal pillow, but even with the humidifier, my nose hates it, and the pressure on my nose from the pillows hurts too much. I made the switch, and I am pretty sure the Mirage LT will be the keeper. I do notice it popping in and out a bit when I breathe (during my 2 hour nap trial today). I'll get used to that. I have my EPR set to 3...and that feels much better than my study with no EPR/A-FLEX.

Sleeping on my side, I woke to a drool puddle, but I assume that will get better over time, as well as other annoyances of Borg Life.

I do want to get some sort of hook to pull the hose over my head. My S8 II sits right at my head on the headboard. 6 feet of hose is annoying when it is so close, and the noise it makes moving around bugs me. I also want a hose snuggie/i] and will check those out for prices.

I hope to acquire RESSCAN 3.7, and a card reader. We'll see if I can budget in that expense once the co-pay hits on this equipment.

I'll be looking around for tips and tricks. I already had my AYR and Nettie Pot before I even had my CPAP, again, thanks to the users on this board. Knowledge is Power

It will be nice to have the DH sleeping all night with me again. It has been several months since that has been possible due to my severe (75 events per hour) apnea and freight-train snoring. I had no idea what bad shape I was in....57% SaO2. Scary!

Just a followup....I ordered my hose lifter http://www.cpap-supply.com/ProductDetai ... ode=HL1250, but in the mean time, I rigged a plastic coat hanger with velcro® over my headboard to hold the hose up...and it works great. Just looks a bit silly for now. But anything is better than waking up to the sound of that hose rubbing across my head, or feeling it across my neck. I also ordered the ResMed branded hose cover http://www.bestcpapprice.com/ResMed-Bra ... 4-331.html, as I like the zipper feature.

If only UPS ground were faster!

Here is what I use to hold my hose up out of the way. Just took the center part out and the hose fits just fine with the cover on it.

That looks like my broom holder
I'm sure that works well, but I needed something a bit more portable
