BiPAP stop itself 7 times last night, why?

Post by jinroh » Thu Sep 24, 2009 4:36 pm

Just checked my data, my BiPAP stopped itself 7 times last night. for 10~20 minutes each.

I haven't waken up for the whole night, and I am pretty sure I don't sleep walk.

So what could be the cause?

You're getting HUGE leaks with your mask, and your machine has the "auto off" feature enabled. Your mask is leaking so badly the machine thinks there's no one on the other end of it so it's turning itself off. You need to turn the "auto off" feature off and fix those leaks!
Machine: M-Series Auto
Mask: Headrest
No humidifier
On the hose since 2005.

Good thing you have a data capable machine and the software or you wouldn't have even known it had cut off. Since you have a full face mask I'm wondering how you breathed while it was off. I don't know the different machines well enough to know if your machine has a leak alarm, but if it has one I think I'd want it set to ON, but if you sleep so sound as to not know the machine wasn't supplying air, I doubt you'd hear the alarm.

I think CollegeGirl nailed the problem.

jinroh, all those solid black blocks that appear horizontally to the right of the letters "LL" in the "Leak" graph are "Large Leak." That means the leak situation has gotten so bad, the machine can't compensate enough (blow harder) to keep the pressure up where it's supposed to be.

The black blocks of "Large Leak" also made the AHI reported by the machine not be accurate. You probably had a much, much worse AHI (a much higher AHI) for that night, because the machine completely stops recording apneas and hypopneas during periods of Large Leak.

You're sleeping through massive leaks. Kathy is so right:

jinroh is smart, got a machine capable of showing detailed data, and got the software to see the details. But the vast majority of CPAP users don't research this stuff, or find this message board. Most just accept whatever the DME gives them and tells them to do.

This is exactly the kind of situation that shows how important it is for DMEs to download every new person's data DURING THE FIRST WEEK instead of waiting a month or more to do a download. It is soooo important to look at the LEAK DATA instead of noting only whether a person is "using" the machine or not. Even when the DME does finally download the card, glancing at a "Summary" report (which is what most DMEs would look at) is not as attention-catching, as seeing the detailed leak data for several nights in a "Full Details" report.

People can and do sleep through massive leaks. What a shame it is when a person is really trying to do right, like jinroh is, but the therapy air is escaping out into the bedroom much of the time, instead of going where it's needed to keep the airway well and truly open. Good job, jinroh, on having equipped yourself with the tools to find out what's happening!!
