Rita Update
I have not vacated yet. The storm has moved towards the Texas/Louisiana border putting me on the clean side. I am hunkered down and ready to leave but I45 is gridlocked and there is no gas. I do have a full tank. Will make final decision about 3 in the morning. I appreciate the notes of concern. I am really enjoying the avatars showing up! Keep them coming.
ROCK:
I know you will make the right desicion in the morning, but know we wish you well and be safe! you and all the others are in our prayers!
best to you,

Hot off the wire ...
Just been listening to ABC radio on my way to work.
Latest story is that RITA is heading between Galveston & Beaumont Tx & as R&R says, has taken a bit of the worry off Galveston.
One other factoid I had no idea of, is that Galveston was aid to be 2 MILES off the coast off Texas. Wow, a big city on an Island, so far from the comfort of large land mass.
The commentator said that normally the water is very calm around the area. No big waves etc: like we are used to on the coast of Sydney.
Still thinking of y'all.

R&R....why are you even hesitating??? Please get out of there. I have to admit that I've been thinking about you alot the past few days. Please put my mind at rest and get to someplace safe.
The meteorologists can only make "guesses" as to what they think will happen. It's all just a crap shoot. Look at Biloxi...they never expected to get hit so hard. Is it really worth the risk to you and your wife? To me this is a no brainer....get safe...PLEASE!!!
Keep us posted if you can.
Amy (I swear I will get a picture posted asap)

R&R, I am praying for you and the others there. Most people do not realize what happens when over a million people try to evacuate. There is not enough gasoline to allow people to flee, as most people do not maintain a quarter of a tank let alone 3/4 of tank in their car to start the evacuation. The line ups start at the service stations to get fuel, then the freeway becomes a parking lot. Getting caught in your car in the open during a hurricane is not a good place to be. I think you have probably made the best decision. Hopefully you are familiar with the low areas, and your place is on high ground. In Houston 10-15 feet can mean everything. Just be sure to stock up on water, turn off the gas to your hot water heater, and turn the main water main off, so you have that as an emergency supply. Get your ready to eat food stock and you will be fine. It looks like Rita has hit the cooler water just off the coast and is weakening a bit.
R/R location
R/R , I tried to locate you. I found Huntsville, ts, but could not find the other city.
If you or others would like to keep a watch on your home, then go to google home page:
http://www.google.com/intl/en/options/
click on google earth. This is the neatest thing I have ever seen.
Now put in your address or zip code and look at your house.
R/R where are you??
check it out.

Advice now is if you are at home stay there. The roads are gridlocked. Nothing is moving. folks have traveled 10 miles in 10 hours. I just met a guy from baytown . He started at 8 pm yesterday. He just made it to San Antonio. There is no gas. food. or toilets . It was a misrible drive. A coworker went to get his parants yesterday. He is stuck in baytown. Says he would rather be stuck in a house than a car when Rita arrives.
My son is stuck in New Caney just north of Houston. Needs to leave cause MIL is on dialysis . But the roads are a mess . I'd fly in to get them but no gurantee he can get to the airport and I would need to make 2 trips .

I appreciate all the notes. If I evacuate, it will be around four in the morning. The roads are just gridlocked and it does not make sense to get out and just sit there. I live on a lake, Lake Conroe, and my house sits a foot and a half overf dam level. I am not subject to storm surge and my house has survived 23" of rainfall by a tropical storm. I have plenty of food and water to drink. I will keep you posted..
Can you believe National Geographic predicted Katrina over a year ago? I guess it goes for TX too.
