sleep apnea and spasmic coughing

Post by emredford » Fri Jan 07, 2005 9:35 pm

My husband is awaiting a sleep test to confirm diagnosis but he is also suffering from these awful coughing fits and brings up a think orange coloured mucus. He cannot get his breath and it is awful to watch. Has anyone else had this problem and if so what should he/I do to help?

Wow, That sounds really bad . Especially the orange mucus. I once had these coughing fits. I would cough till I gagged. Had them for a month or more.. Went to the ENT Dr. He told me that my larnyx was swollen from the coughing. Then he taught me how to cough without causing more irritation. Sort of like a cat hissing. I can't really describe it. That and large doses of ibupropen did the trick.

I dont know what to say about the orange stuff.. Better see a Dr. Ceder fever maybe if you live in texas.

    Good luck ,

    Colored Mucus

If he's coughing up colored mucus or as it's called sputum, then he needs to talk to a pulmonary specialist. They will attempt to culture his sputum, take an X-ray and maybe tale a peek into the lungs with a tube to see if anything looks different.

Normal lung sputum is clear to white and is brought up daily and swallowed into the stomach. This is how the lungs keep particles out.

Talk to your physician and ask questions- it's your husbands life.
