VERY OT POLL: Which Advertising Category?

General Discussion on any topic relating to CPAP and/or Sleep Apnea.

You need to have tapes/digital recordings transcribed, where would you look in yellow pages first?

VERY OT POLL: Which Advertising Category?

Post by WearyOne » Sat Jul 25, 2009 12:46 pm

There are so many helpful people here with such diverse backgrounds, I was hoping it would be okay to post this VERY OT poll. It's my first poll, so be nice!! LOL

Our yellow page directory has many categories that my business fits into--I transcribe audio recordings mainly for insurance companies, focus groups, seminars, etc. I do not handle medical transcription.

I need help in deciding where the average business person would first look in the yellow pages so I can put my main focus (i.e. money) there and have smaller listings in a few of the lesser-chosen categories. The choices I listed above are exactly as they are in my local yellow page directory. After having several new clients say they had a hard time finding me, I was beginning to think maybe where I have my business is not where people are looking!

Also, any advice or thoughts are more than welcome.

Thanks for the help!!

Pam

Hi, as a former med. transcriptionist who started her own home business (and took on other 'fields' as well as medical) I would call either of the 3rd or 4th options (you can always ask the 4th one if they process your kind of tapes, or whatever). Not knowing, however, what kind of work you're talking about - is it legal vs medical? - it's otherwise hard to say. Whether or not a court reporter would take on extra work.. who knows?

Transcription services makes the most sense to me. I would add, though, that I virtually never use the yellow pages any more. If I were looking for them, I'd probably start by Googling "transcription services nj" or transcription services and my town or county.

My son's working on my web site, but I do need to be in the yellow pages as well. I've asked a few clients where they found me, and the all said yellow pages. Most of my clients I've gotten through referrals, but the others say yellow pages. But I could easily be missing out on others I don't even know about because they're looking solely on the web.

Thanks everyone---this is very helpful!

If I follow what you mean, #3 or #4, My sister-in-law co-owns a medical transcription service, servicing Doctors and Hospitals, They have quite a few transcribers that work for them from their homes and are paid by word rate. They change voice to print, using the computer as input and output. Jim

Yep, that's pretty much it, except I work for myself, and I do everything except medical transcription because I don't have the background for that. I've found that some people don't know what "transcription" means, they just know they need what's on the tape typed out!

Been doing this for over 13 years and although I've always been in the yellow pages, I want to enhance that and make sure I'm in the best categories that people are looking for, which so far is what people are picking here. I'm also under "Secretarial Services," but now I'm wondering if that isn't where people look at all. I have specialized equipment for tapes and specialized software for digital files.

I would look first in the White Pages for Woods, Rose Mary.

I don't want any record of the things I regularly spout.

I have done medical transcription in the past, so transcription services seems a natural to me. Would never cross my mind to look under secretarial services, as it's a different job skill, but maybe someone unfamiliar would.

Thanks everyone for your input; it's been very helpful. It's looking like the "secretarial" category is one I might be able to do without!
