I'm in the woods and need help.
Hi all.
I'm in the middle of the woods at my parents place and the mosquitos are like a blanket covering the planet here.
I'm sleeping in the sleep camp tonight and need to put a "pic" on to rid my little bunkie of the skitters. Any advice on what to do about the temporary fumes that will come from the pic and my machine? I'm very nervous about taking in that stuff through my intake but if I don't I'm going to end up being bitten from head to toe!!
I thought about only running it for 5 minutes to get rid of most them and then waiting to put the machine on? Anyone campers have any advice.

Now that is a novel question - not sure of how much the fumes can impregnate the machine but if they are noticeable it will pick the odor up.
Some smells can be really hard to get out. I have had a machine that smelled like perfume but after sticking to using it over a few nights it did
improve. Smoke smell (fire & cigarette) seem to be almost impossible to get out if picked up strongly.
On the other hand I'm sitting here thinking of how many mossies it takes to clog a cpap filter

One thing you might try is putting your blower unit outside wherever it is you are sleeping. Otherwise, keep the coil and the machine as far apart as you can. Something tells me keeping the machine down low will help. too.
I alos looked up what a 'pic' is, and got an education. (I've known these by other names. And here in this part of Nevada, I am lucky if I see 2 or 3 mosquitos a year ) If it uses the same bug repellant (pyrethin) it did when it came out, that is pretty benign stuff. Not sure how to filter it out of the air, but I suspect that it would be pulled out by oil. That said, you don't want oil in your machine, either.

There is this wonderful third world invention called a Mosquito Net. I used one almost a year in Viet Nam, worked quite well. Using sprays to kill the critters, are hard on your lifespan too, not to mention the damage to XPAP things.
As far as them clogging the XPAP filter, Mosquitos are drawn to CO2 you breath out, they won't swarm your air intake on the XPAP. Jim

Pyrethrins are neurotoxins that attack the nervous systems of all insects. When present in amounts not fatal to insects, they still appear to have an insect repellent effect. Care should be taken when using this substance around humans and animals. Overdose and toxicity can result in a variety of symptoms, especially in pets, including drooling, lethargy, muscle tremors, vomiting, seizures and death. Toxicity symptoms in humans include asthmatic breathing, sneezing, nasal stuffiness, headache, nausea, incoordination, tremors, convulsions, facial flushing and swelling, and burning and itching sensation.
On a lighter note:
"Mosquito is out, it's the end of the day;
she's humming and hunting her evening away.
Who knows why such hunger arrives on such wings,
I guess it's the nature of things."

HI all!! Okay, Given my internet reception disappeared as soon as I got into my "bunkie" I couldn't respond last night but this is what I did.
I ran the "pic" for about 10 minutes to kill whatever of the little buggers managed to get in when I went in. That worked and they were all flopping about on the floor as I smooshed them. I then opened one of the windows to clear the air.
I kept the machine low in a dresser drawer all night and didn't have any problems.
I wasn't concerned about the skitters clogging the machine more how toxic the fumes from the pic were.
Anyhow. I had a lovely night sleeping in my son's normal accomodation at my parent's place. Popped a DVD into the puter to fall asleep. Woke up to the call of the loon.
Walked out and was dive bombed by all those skitters laying in wait outside my door!! It was crazy. It was like a wall of the little buggers. LOL.
Back to civilization tonight though as my business up north was taken care of. Heading back next week though to play for a week

I'm looking at something similar to the mosquito nettings on this page:

After all, New Orleans was the home of "Bronze John," aka yellow fever... and we're now in hurricane season. (Of course, those Canadian skeeters starve all winter, so they're even more voracious when they thaw out!)
